Why does my foam blanket not smell clean after I wash it?

Asked by jca (36062points) July 30th, 2011

I have one of those foam blankets, the kind that resembles velour. I wash it in the washing machine with detergent, and put it in the dryer. It comes out of the dryer not smelling clean. Everything else that I dry in the dryer smells fine.

Why would a foam blanket not smell clean after being washed? It’s washed a lot, so it’s not like it’s extremely smelly when it goes into the machine.

You cannot put foam in the dryer. You need to air dry it or user a hair dryer. Foam is not a product that is recommended to be put in a dryer.
They absorb a huge amount of liquid and would not only take forever, but break down the foam.

Wring it out and air dry it.

I have no idea about this, but I’m wondering whether the foam absorbed bacteria from the washing machine.

Might be a solution to the obnoxious stench my washing machine produces. Can’t get rid of it.

Re-wash it in Gentle cycle, using detergent and ½ cup vinegar. I had the same prob. with towels. Works like a charm!

About 10 years ago, the hotel chain I worked for made it a standard that all of the hotels had this type of blanket on the beds. I was an inspector at the time, and it was interesting to see what kind of problems arose from having them, both from the staff and guest perspectives.

This type of blanket is made out of man-made materials that can easily be damaged if put in a dryer on too high of a heat level. I’ve seen many that were left with marks from melting due to being stuffed into a dryer and set on high. The material isn’t absorbent like cotton fibers, so there is less likely to be a lingering fresh scent from detergent alone after it goes through the rinse cycle.

Care instructions are typically drying the blanket in a dryer on a low setting, and some suggest removing it before fully dry.
