Can you help me with a story line for a 6 part zombie role playing game? (See details)

Asked by Rarebear (25192points) July 31st, 2011

I want to run a d20 modern zombie campaign. (I don’t want to talk about gaming systems—we have the d20 modern books and I’m going to use them). I’d like it to be a mini campaign with a 6 episode story arc. The players, who are all experienced, would be playing ordinary people trying to survive in a post zombie apocalypse. I’ve played in campaigns that went on and on, one for more than 10 years, and others that really didn’t go anywhere. I want this story to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. The beginning would be discovering the zombie plague, and the end would either be a wipeout of civilization, or the party are heroes in saving civilization.

What I’m looking for are ideas for a story arc. I have my own research sources (zombie movies, podcasts, books, etc.) but I thought it might be fun to ask y’all for ideas.

I don’t know much about making stories…but maybe you could use the mechanics to help you. If your players get to high enough levels, killing zombies won’t net any exp, but they may be granted some for the methods they use kill them. You could include some important characters that aren’t zombies, but something undead, that they would have to get to, to stop shit. It would be kinda cool if some ancient demon from the seventh circle of Hell was responsible for this, and your guys would have to travel down there to stop everything. But of course, hordes of zombies would ever be present, and creative ways in which to destroy them would be the key to getting ahead. Maybe you could include those ways as part of the story.
Depends on what kinda flair you want your plot to have. I can’t help much beyond suggesting stuff that’s already normal zombie apocalypse fanfare, but you gotta start that shit in a ruined Waterdeep. That would rock. Get the players a real enough setting before they eventually travel down to Hell itself. Hope this helps a little bit.

@Symbeline I thought about doing something that starts in something like Waterdeep, but instead of D&D I’d really like to run a d20 modern campaign that has no magic. I’ve got the game mechanics down okay; what I really need is a story line.

Ah crap, sorry, I’m braindead lol. Looking up d20 modern, I’m not familiar with it at all. So this is a modern universe? (looking it up)

Would love to help as soon as you tell me what a d20 modern campaign is, thanks!

Plus maybe you might want to check this out. Zombie question

@Symbeline Yes. It’s similar to D&D with a similar game mechanic, but it’s simpler. Also, magic is deliberately not built into it unless you especially want it. It allows for a grittier game—kind of like GURPS that way.

d20 modern can be used for different games—I’m playing in one that takes place in 1850 San Francisco. There are modules for future and past play.

@Dutchess_III My avatar bothered you so I changed it.

It didn’t bother me, darlin’. I just thought maybe that was a hint that you were dying of something again and I was worried! You can bring it back…and now people will know how you got that big ass gunshot hole in your gut!
