Is this true? The cereal box says, "America's Favorite Cereal". More...

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) August 2nd, 2011

I read a lot of food and cereal box labels. A particular box of cereal, by General Mills, states that Honey Nut Cheerios are America’s favorite cereal. This may be true, but how did General Mills arrive at this conclusion? My cereal box of Honey Nut Cheerios does not give a reference to a survey taken to back-up this statement. I must admit that I do have two huge 21.6 oz. boxes of this cereal, sitting directly in front of me. Question: how did General Mills decide that their Honey Nut Cheerios is America’s favorite cereal? Lets take our own survey…what is your favorite box of cereal and why?

Cheerios.
Kashi makes some killer runner-ups, but Cheerios have been my favorite for the longest.

Quisp! Because it is a softer, gentler version of Captain Crunch!

Like many official studies and polls, they make “facts” up.
I eat oatmeal just about every morning but if I could,I would sneak in a bowl of Cocoa puffs, for I am coo-coo for them! ;)

When I was a kid, Nerds cereal was my favorite. It was very short-lived.

Kashi GoLean is my favorite now.

It is advertising. And advertising is basically legal and socially acceptable lying.

Interesting, i’ve no idea what the UK’s fave cereal is.
Maybe Corn Flakes or could be Weetabix…...this will keep me awake at night now ;¬}

Raisin Bran (no particular brand) is my favorite when fresh fruit isn’t in season. Plain Cheerios with fresh blueberries, strawberries or bananas is is divine.

I can’t imagine that Honey Nut Cheerios would surpass the plain ones in popularity. Look at all of the parents that carry around a bag of them for their baby.

Yep, it is true, thanks to a massive marketing push. From this NYT article

“Honey Nut Cheerios surpassed its progenitor in sales in October 2009 to become the country’s No. 1 cereal and has kept the top spot since.”

Life cereal does it for me. I love the sugary crumbs at the bottom.

Barbara’s Peanut Butter Puffins or Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch.

It hurts the roof of my mouth so good.

That can be, but it is also “The Netherlands’ Least Favorite Cereal”.

Wheaties or MultiGrain Cheerios. I eat one when I grow tired of the other.

82.5% of Americans prefer Cheddar Nut Wheatios (OK, I just made that up, it doesn’t mean a thing.)

According to The Independent The top 10 best-selling cereals in the UK are: Weetabix, Special K, Corn Flakes, Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes, Frosties, Rice Krispies, Coco Pops, Shredded Wheat, Shreddies and Alpen.

Shreddies are my favourite.

@ucme and @downtide When we make smoothies, we crumble a Weetabix cake in with it for the fiber. It’s delicious.
