Is this a good time for a 1250m swim?

Asked by tranquilsea (17775points) August 2nd, 2011

On the advice of everyone you guys included I started swimming tonight. I managed to swim 1250 meters in just over 51 minutes. Keep in mind that all activities, for me, have been halted for 5 months due to an operation and an injury so I was taking it fairly easy today.

Is this a good time? What sort of time can I aim for that would be reasonable?

It’s a baseline that you can compare yourself to. It doesn’t matter what “average” is. Physical activity for health is about improving from where you started, not comparing yourself to anyone else.

@Judi I agree but I like knowing averages and things I can aim for. I’ll be aiming to improve this.

You did good just to cover that distance. Way to go. However with consistent training you will be able to to do far better. I’m 60 and can swim a half mile in open water in less than 15 minutes and can likely cover 1250 meters in around 20 minutes. Keep up the good work!

@gondwanalon thanks for the info. I really paced myself out because I am paranoid about re-injuring my knee. The pace I set I could have swum for another hour easily.

Any time at that distance is a good time. I would shoot for 45 mins and then embrace each and every better time after that! Great job! Swimming is awesome exercise!

At 17, in very good physical shape, I swam a mile in a lake in under 25 minutes.
It would be better for you to use your own time as a benchmark, and not mine.

@Cruiser I think what I am going to do instead is shoot for ever greater distances in an hour. The only reason I stopped at 51 minutes was that my knee was getting a bit sore and my hubby gave up at the 40 minute mark and became a bit of a pest.

I have to say, after having my running routine hijacked by compartment syndrome it was nice to be able to do something for nearly an hour and not be racked with pain.

@tranquilsea I have to say swimming for 51 minutes straight is awesome! Watch the knee though and think of wearing a knee support until it gets better. Keep it up!

@filmfann That time could be attainable as my measurements are in meters and yours are in feet. :-P

@Cruiser I’ve thinking about getting a knee support because stupid mundane things seem to aggravating it. My whole goal is to get back running again.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement everyone. After a spend a bit of time getting my times improved for swimming and I’m all healed up I should train for a triathlon.
