Would smoking count as a sin?

Asked by Jay484 (1555points) August 3rd, 2011

Would smoking Cigarettes count as a sin because the 10 commandments say “though shall not kill” but smoking Cigarettes slowly kills you so would it be a sin to smoke?

Smoking is a sin against your flesh not your soul. Your soul is what you want to save.

It is not a sin to be stupid!

Corinthians would seem to consider it vandalism.

“Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”

“Cor 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, allot that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”

Psalm would suggest God does not like it but is ok with it.

“Psa 91:16 With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.”

Genesis would hint that plants are for eating.

“Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

Never mind…... I just think I would start a debate if I explained the frivolity of “counting” our sins.

Yes.

If there were a modern day 10 commandments – it might be right there at the top.

I wouldn’t go so religious in that respect.. It’s a choice (and weren’t we given that, good or bad?)..

_zen_'s avatar

@chewhorse It’s a choice for the smoker – but unlike alcohol – it affects everyone around them with the passive smoke. It’s horrid.

@Cruiser Sometimes I wish it were but then no one would make it to heaven. LOL

Not any more (unless your peeping through windows) haven’t you heard? Smokers are limited to the confines of their own home and those who defy this rule aren’t real smokers, their rebelious and self-serving.

Only if you knew it was wrong of you to smoke.

Photo evidence.

Catholics are my go-to guys for sin answers, and Catholics say it is not a sin to smoke.

There is nothing inherently sinful about smoking a cigarette, or a joint, or a crack pipe even.

Sin arises when these things take over your self control. A butchering of truth has occurred.

When one cannot function properly without them, then your personal will has been compromised. This can happen with sugar, or caffeine, or alcohol, or anything which is addictive.

“Thou shalt not have any other Gods before me”… the first commandment.

If you need cigarettes to be whole, then you have replaced the wholeness that God can provide with cigarettes.

Yes and No. Yes, because you’re slowly killing your body. No, because you’re not killing someone with a gun or drugs or a knife or anything like that. You are killing yourself, but slowly. So, yes and no. It’s in the bible.

There is a book called Where to find it in the bible and that could help you a little.

I’m a Catholic. I smoke. Trying to quit though. I don’t think it’s sinful.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Do you think it’s sinful to smoke crack @Pele?

@poisonedantidote “Genesis would hint that plants are for eating.
“Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

I’ve used that same verse to promote the legalization of marijuana. You don’t have to smoke it. If God made it, and gave it to humans, then I argue that the inherent psychoactive compounds could also provide a degree of mental nourishment… meat for the mind so to speak.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t smoke weed. I just don’t think the gov should be allowed to regulate a plant that grows naturally out of the ground, unlike meth, or crack, which must be processed. I feel the same about magic mushrooms.

These are, and have been, used by many over the centuries in religious practices, dating as far back as Shamanic cultures. Many believe they can bring one closer to God. But like anything, if abused in a recreational manner, they can be harmful. I see them as quite beneficial in limited use during a ritualistic pursuit of spirituality.

The idea of smoke being used to appease the Gods is not new. Even the Catholics burn incense. Theory being that vibrations created by a voice that is singing praises to God join into the smoke which dissipates into the aether, thereby more effectively carrying the praises into the realm of the almighty.

No, I don’t think it would. But I don’t care anyway.

blueberry_kid's avatar

@disenchanted_poisongirl I’m guessing you’re non religious?

josie's avatar

No. But it is certainly unhealthy.
Communicating ideas to a bronze age civilization that believed in Spirits probably required a simple message. This is a sin. This is not.
We can do better than that now.

Berserker's avatar

Here’s what I found about that. I remember reading this verse in the New Testament when looking up suicide as a list of problems that God and The Bible can help you with. (I looked up all the problems that directed you to specific pages, no suicide story here)
So I guess it could be, since you’re supposed to take care of the body that God gave you. But I’m also confused by how drinking seems to never be mentioned. Then again neither is smoking…goes all in the same plate?
