What is a good, practical 50th anniversary gift for friends (not family)?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 6th, 2011

Friends of our family are having a 50th anniversary party tomorrow. They are simple people, they have a house but it is plainly decorated, without a lot of crap in it. They don’t use computers. They are both in their 70’s. They have a large family who is throwing the party, and since it’s last minute, I am not able to do something crafty as a gift.

What is a good practical gift I can give them? The party is tomorrow (and of course I forgot about a gift until now) and any and all suggestions are appreciated.

I love to give nice picture frames as gifts at events like these. I don’t put a picture in it. You could get a nice gold one for them to put a picture of themselves at their golden anniversary time.

Picture frames are practical, and few people buy nice ones for their own pictures.

Just in case, how about a pair of wine glasses?

It is never too late to do something creative. Here is one idea: Purchase or find a box. A recipe card box would be ideal, but anything on the small side would work. Bring along a stack of index cards and pens. Ask the host to distract the couple while you pass out the cards and pens to those attending. Instruct the group to write down one fond memory of the couple and their name on their card. Then place all of the cards in the box. If you have time, paint the box gold or wrap it in gold wrapping paper. Trust me…it will be a hit with the couple, and anyone can add to it at any given time.

Grocery stores have tons of different gift cards you can buy. I’d pick up one for a movie theater chain enough for two adults to have a movie and about $10.00 of snacks and another card for a restaurant chain you think they might enjoy or try. I’ve had good appreciation when giving Black Angus cards and also Red Lobster because they are also good at Olive Garden, pretty safe chains.

Walgreens…open till 10 pm.

Body Throws in aisle 12, $10 bucks each. One for him and one for her.

Pick up a nice Anniversary Card, while you are there. Also, older people like to eat out often. Buy them a money card for Red Lobster.

Hurry.

I also was going to suggest making an outing possible. Perhaps tickets to a play and dinner.
