Can you tell me your favorite name for a my new band out of these three names?

Asked by raven2783 (119points) August 6th, 2011

I asked a similar question before, but I’ve narrowed it down to just four.

Sheepshifter
Ego Sodomy
Building A Remedy
Lug

Out of those four, Building a Remedy is the best.

None of the above. Are you a sex band? Then, rule out Ego Sodomy

Do you buy and sell sheep? Then, rul out Sheepshifter

Are you a chemist? If not, Building A Remedy is no where.

Do you make lug nuts for auto tires? If not, it sounds like slug.

You need something catchy that people will remember.

How about this…......Gas X

People always have gas, either body or gasoline and they will forever remember this name.

@john65pennington Isn’t Gas X the name of an OTC remedy?

Your question says three names, but your description has four. The third seems too long (5 syllables) for a band name, unless you abbreviate it. I like either the first or second one the best. The fourth seems short with 1 syllable. Because of the ending -g, it is pronounced quicker and sharper than many other one syllable words, such “these” and “flow”, which are longer.

@PhiNotPi I edited it and it didn’t seem to change the question to four, I thought I erased three and wrote in four. Now it’s to much time after I posted it to edit it. :(

Do you want people to come see you?

PhiNotPi's avatar

It is important to make your name descriptive. You want people to hear the name and instantly know what sort of band you are and what type of music you play. We do not know what type of band you are, so it is hard for us to make suggestions.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, you would have to wonder what kind of people would turn out to see a band called “Ego Sodomy” or “Lug”. “Building A Remedy” is too long.
If those are our only choices, I’d go with sheepshifter…even though it makes no sense.

FutureMemory's avatar

@Dutchess_III My guess is people that are a good 30 years younger than you. I don’t think many people in that age group decide whether or not to go see a band based on how appealing their name is.

I like ‘Building a Remedy’. I think the ‘Manic Street Preachers’, if you know them, could have almost been called that. Hope your music is actually trying to do something good though!!

Only138's avatar

How about “Sheep Sodomy”?

lemming's avatar

How bout ‘The Birdies’? or ‘The Ladybirds’? or ‘The Beatles’?

raven2783's avatar

@lemming I’m sure you know those are taken and are making a joke, but I don’t get it?

lemming's avatar

It’s a joke, the only one I know is taken is The Beatles. If I have to explain myself it’s not very funny:( My bad.

raven2783's avatar

@lemming Haha. Naming a band sucks. One name to be your label. God dammit.

raven2783's avatar

They’re all taken it seems like.

My vote is forever on Carnal Epiphany. :D

raven2783's avatar

@AshLeigh Haha! I forgot about that one! I just read the other thread and found where that happened.

AshLeigh's avatar

I don’t even remember how it happened. I just like that one. :D:D:D

woodcutter's avatar

Sodomy Sheepshifter

sliceswiththings's avatar

I’m another vote for none of the above. How about naming your band “None of The Above?”

raven2783's avatar

@sliceswiththings That name’s taken four times on last.fm :/

Berserker's avatar

Ego Sodomy is pretty slick.

woodcutter's avatar

@Symbeline Doesn’t that name sync with Mind Fuck?

Berserker's avatar

Aye. Which rocks.

raven2783's avatar

@Symbeline Ego Sodomy is my favorite because I made the phrase up and because the most significant thing that has ever happened to me was an ego death I had while tripping on mushrooms.

A lot of people don’t like the name though. One person asked me if I wanted to be known as ”..that sodomy guy” when referring to my band (if that were to be the name).

So why do you like it?

Berserker's avatar

Because it stands out, sounds clever, can mean a lot of things (as you’ve shown with your example) and has style.
I suppose some of that may depend on what kind of music the band does, but that’s not really important. Sounds cool to me.

raven2783's avatar

@woodcutter Ego Sodomy to you, means Mind Fuck? Sweeeet.

chewhorse's avatar

It really depends on your format.. I don’t think a C&W band would pick any of the above and as such for a rap band (?) but somewhere in between one could probably be decided on without much adieu.. So, what are you all about? (Lug goes well with a metal sound).. Or how about.. ¿ ..

raven2783's avatar

@chewhorse The band is going to be a three piece. Drums, Bass Guitar, Guitar, and singing. On the first album of songs I have there are a few that sound a lot like they could have been on the Nirvana Bleach album or Stabbing Westward Darkest Days, but there are also others that are not as dark and heavy that sound like a mix of Joy Division and Bauhaus. ? It’s hard to describe music. The lyrics are personal and there is some satire and a lot of stabs at conformity, tradition, and corporate America.

FutureMemory's avatar

I was also curious about what type of music you play. From what you’ve described, Ego Sodomy sounds appropriate, although a lot of people may think you chose the word sodomy for shock effect more than anything else.

augustlan's avatar

Stab at Conformity sounds good. ;)

downtide's avatar

Building a Remedy is too long for a band name but it would make a great album title. Maybe you could shorten the band name to The Remedy.

I really don’t like any of the others, unless you’re a punk or heavy metal band.

chewhorse's avatar

Thanks for the clearification.. Of the three I suppose I would choose Ego sodomy.
