How to boost the sound on a laptop for movies only?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) August 7th, 2011

I’ve noticed that the sound quality of any dvd I watch on my laptop is not the best. The sound will be so soft on some movies, you can barely hear it. The volume will be at full length on my laptop and inside the movie player.

However…the sound is just fine when surfing youtube and other video sites, so I don’t think it’s my laptop that’s causing the problem.

Any ideas on how to fix the sound for dvd’s on a laptop?

I am aware I can get external speakers, but I’m talking about when I’m traveling. No one wants to lug around heavy speakers when they travel.

You can’t do anything except hook upexternal speakers or some nice headphones, I got some bluetooth ones that you don’t even notice, it sounds like you are at the theater.

I suppose you could extract the audio, boost it in audacity or some other program and merge it and the video, but nothing else.

Why is it that headphones boost sound tremendously?

Laptop speakers always sound like shit.

There’s nothing you can do except get head phones or lug around externals.

Think, with headphones the speakers are right beside your ear, so ot will obviously be louder.

@FutureMemory not true, my laptop has pretty decent speakers, although some movies that are quieter are hard to hear. It’s got good quality though.

@XOIIO Is your laptop high quality overall?

In VLC it will let you crank up the volume a lot more than other players will allow.

@FutureMemory yeah, I did pay a grand and a half for it.

I have the same problem with my laptop and there’s not much you can do except use external speakers … but they don’t have to be big and clunky. I travel with a small speaker like this one (if you cursor over the images you can see how small it is in relation to a laptop) and it has pretty decent sound and volume but I’m considering getting/upgrading to this one this one. It looks like it would fit pretty nicely in my laptop bag.

These are only two types of small speakers but there are a whole lot of options for external speakers that are pretty convenient to carry around and travel with.

How about the Obama Ramas? Wouldn’t that get everyone’s knicker’s in a twist?

@lillycoyote Did you post your last answer in the right thread? I can’t figure out how that picture fits with a discussion about computers.

I second trying VLC player. This has helped me in the same situation!

@FutureMemory LOL. So that’s what happened to that damn post!!! Mystery solved! I thought I was, I meant to post it on this thread but when I went back to the thread it simply wasn’t there; it was like it had disappeared into thin air. I couldn’t figure out what the hell had happened to it, I was certain I had posted it. Oops! :-)

@FutureMemory And it’s funny, I get modded for being off-topic all the time yet that response is still there and it couldn’t be more off topic. I should flag myself. :-)
