Do you have any advice for someone who wants to market a packaged food product?

Asked by crisedwards (329points) August 7th, 2011

I am a normal guy, and I have an idea for a packaged food product I’d like to produce (or have produced) and market to the public and to restaurants. Have you ever done this or know of someone who has? Any advice on seeking funding, finding producers or packagers or distributors?

It depends where you live, of course, but before getting too into the marketing and distribution end, it pays to learn about the local regulations and what it would take to produce the food product legally. Food products often have costs and responsibilities attached that non-edibles do not, such as a licensed and inspected kitchen. For instance, if you live in Michigan, here is what you will have to deal with.
