Does this mean that my monitor is dead?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) August 9th, 2011

I was working on my computer, and my monitor just went black. Does that mean it has bitten the big one? It predated my most recent computer purchase so it was pretty old.

Also, are there command keys that I can use to safely shut down the computer? I have Windows Vista.

If you have a win key, click that and u, then enter to shut down/restart.

Your monitor could be dead, or it could be your video card. Do you have another pc to hook it up to?

OK, I used the WIN key, U and enter. It stopped the current app that I was running. But the light is still on on the CPU.

The only other machine that I have is a laptop.

Now the computer is talking to me.

sorry, not win and U at same time. :) That will activate the narrator.

Connect that monitor to your laptop (and make sure you go into settings to activate that monitor. If you still get nothing, it’s probably the monitor.

I’m assuming you checked all the power cords. My monitor goes off if I try to turn it at all.
