How do you show gratitude?

Asked by atlantis (1862points) August 11th, 2011

You’re euphoric and and struck by an epiphany. You must do something. Something to express your feeling of overwhelming gratitude towards LIFE. How do you say thank you to life?

I don’t thank life. I thank the creator of life.

It’s complicated @atlantis. Yet so easy. Fluther has grown quite weary of me preaching about it and so I must decline to share the dirty little details.

Long story short, I do what any other child of a creator would do naturally. I create.

Thanking God and dedicating my life to being a good person…

You seek out and thank the Author of Life and YOUR life – Godhead as revealed in the Holy Bible. Really the whole point of life is to discover who God is and once having had that personal encounter, go on and celebrate the freedom of being loved and pass it on!! All the while you continue to grow in your knowledge and faith of the purpose of life. We know life is a journey filled with happiness and tears but we need them both to grow. Just like sunshine and rain!

I pass it on, pay it forward. Be cheerful and forgiving and kind and helpful and friendly. Smile, say hello to people, perform random acts of kindness.

I don’t show gratitude “to life”, I just feel it. “Worshiping” a non-entity seems pointless. When I feel gratitude towards a person or animal, then I express it explicitly. Otherwise, I “feel” gratitude no matter whether I’m euphoric and on top of the world, or feeling in pain or misery: whatever I have, it’s my life and I’m grateful for it (at least for now).

I try to maintain.

Like @RealEyesRealizeRealLies, I create—I write, compose, sketch… I also find someone close to share my joy with.

Several people have already given very good examples of expressing gratitude by living worthy lives, and I agree that this is the truest expression. But you seem to be asking about those moments when gratitude floods in and you feel compelled to acknowledge it in some concrete way.

In those situations, it feels very natural—almost instinctive—to bring my hands palm to palm for a moment. It’s a traditional Buddhist expression of gratitude, but I actually think there’s something about this gesture that goes beyond ideology and resonates somehow on a primal level. Maybe it’s the uniting of the “two” into “one”, closing the circle of the arms…I don’t know. I just know that my hands find their way together in those moments of deep gratitude, and it feels very right.
