Who were the first twins performing as 'one child' on TV?

Asked by jeleia (148points) August 12th, 2011

I was thinking for example of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen playing “Michelle” on Full House all those years ago. I know it is to do with child labor laws, but I was wondering if anyone knows which was the first TV show to use twins in this way, and some more examples of twins that have been used as ‘one child’ on TV shows over the years.

I’m thinking it might have been on the I Love Lucy show, Little Ricky.

The twins on “Bewitched”? Maybe?

From Wikipedia:Tabitha Stephens’s birth in the season 2 episode “And Then There Were Three” featured infant Cynthia Black in the role. For the remainder of the season, Tabitha was played by twins Heidi and Laura Gentry, followed by twins Tamar and Julie Young. Fraternal twin toddlers Diane and Erin Murphy were cast for the role at the beginning of season 3. In time, they began to look less alike, so Diane was dropped during season 4. Diane made several guest appearances in other roles, and filled in as Tabitha one last time in season 5’s “Samantha Fights City Hall”, because Erin had mumps.

But I keep thinking that there must have been an older show that did this first….this is just the first one that came to mind.

I thought it was “Lassie”

I thought it was Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush, who both played Carrie Ingalls on “Little House On the Prairie”.

@woodcutter—-Lol.

Joseph and Michael Mayer played Little Ricky in fall 1953, Bewitched twins where not on tv till 1966. Lassie series didn’t start till 1954.
So I think @chyna is right.
