Is everything that makes you happy the right thing?

Asked by QueenOfNowhere (1871points) August 14th, 2011

I was reading a book and it focuses on living a positive life. At one part it says that everything we do in life that makes us feel happy are right. Nothing is wrong with them if we are happy at the end of it. I thought about the crazy things I’ve done in the past that I would consider “wrong” before, but I was happy… So this book says they weren’t wrong, they were right in my life.
What do you think?

I think that heroin users think that heroin makes them happy…

Well, some psychos out there feel happy after raping or killing someone, so I don’t think everything that makes you happy is right.

Nope. If I were to rob a jewelry store because the diamond necklace in the window made me happy… That defense wouldn’t hold up in court.

if they ever caught me, that is

@Tuesdays_Child Yeah the moment I read this book drugs came to my mind.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies So do you choose to love a specific guy or does it just happen? Or is it different when it comes to “love”?

I don’t know the book to which you’re referring, but my guess is that it speaks of contentment and inner peace, which brings true happiness I guess.
I think it’s too simplistic to say “no” as we know that drugs, etc, etc are about escapism, which doesn’t make a person truly happy.
I may use drugs, feel a temporary lift/sense of euphoria, etc, but that doesn’t equate to inner joy/happiness by any means.
Great, thought provoking question @QueenOfNowhere

It’s always a choice. And sometimes I choose to let the river do the rowing.

For me no.

Stealing a few gnomes and a flamingo from my neighbor’s yard and placing them in my other neighbor’s yard makes me totally happy and giddy inside, but is it the right thing to make my neighbors fight and not trust each other? No. lawl.

Murdering probably makes a psychopath happy…

(Edit: That’s already been said.)

Yes and no. Both.

It’‘s a dichotomy like many things.

Doing anything seriously destructive to self or others is not the road to happiness, but, as long as you do no great harm, take your pleasure as you will.

My pleasure on this lovely Sunday afternoon is enjoying a happy brownie and watering the trees in my front yard. Playing in the hose, shooting 30 foot jets of water high into the canopy of the trees and waiting for the mist to waft down. haha
Makes me happy when I eat a happy brownie. Ya know, my trees really ARE beautiful. lol

If it makes you happy and makes no one else unhappy, then yes, I think it is okay.

If it is rational, sure.

@MilkyWay Crystal CLEAR! I do not have to answer.

Some people get off on (makes ‘em happy?) being impatient or angry or domineering or needlessly competitive, doesn’t seem right to me.
Maybe it’s folks confusing a rush of any kind with happiness.
