Back in the 60’s, when I was in Elementary school, a note went around the classroom for everyone to close their desks hard at a certain time.
That time came, and there was a huge “SLAM”. The teacher was stunned for a moment, then quickly pulled out a pile of papers, and handed out a test for everyone to take.

So, if you’re gonna flash mob, don’t do it during class. The teachers are way smarter than you are.

Do it during lunch period or if you know of a spirit day or a pep rally work with who ever is running the show to plan one during the really that looks impromptu :)

Make sure it does not turn into violence like the flash mobs in Philadelphia. What about a planned flash mob to spruce up a playground or park in your area?

Yes, flash mobs have a bad name here (in Philly), after they started mugging people and damaging property. We now have a curfew for teens. 9 pm. Out of center city and west philly.

Flash mobs need to have a positive purpose. They can’t be just for the sake of a mob. A mob will always find something to do, and if it isn’t guided right, it will turn violent.

Why do you want to form a mob? Just to do it? I hope not. I hope that you will pick a purpose of doing something good for the community—something good that is needed at this moment in time. See if you can organize a mob around that.

At the very least, let it be an artistic flash mob. It could be an art happening of some kind. But please don’t let it be a violent thing.

@wundayatta I thought flash mobs were about getting together to “randomly” do some choreographed dancing, Glee-style. That’s why I don’t participate, because I have two left feet.

What is a mob? [besides the crowd and video game monster].

Great idea! I also suggest doing it during a time that won’t piss off your teachers. You also want it to be when a lot of people will see it. @abysmalbeauty had some good suggestions. Also, what about as school lets out and everyone is waiting for busses and I assume many of the teachers come outside. Or, in between classes one day? It might make everyone a few minutes late for class in the end, but if your teachers tend to stand in the halls while kids change classes maybe they will catch the performance. All kids, all of a sudden dancing in the halls. Of course if somehow you can trust a person in the office, maybe you could get the music over the PA. But, probably you can’t trust an adult to keep the secret and cooperate?

@Aethelflaed If only. Flashmobs in Philadelphia have been robbing and attacking people. The article I have linked to relates the formation of these mobs to violence and poverty in the black areas of the city. Most commentators link the flash mobs to the protests in Tunisia and Egypt and so on. These might resemble the violence that is going on in England if it is allowed to continue.

The Mayor has added lots of police to the streets in the evening, but who knows what that will do. The thing about flash mobs is the flash. They can happen anywhere at any time.

You need not worry about dancing in a Philly flash mob. All you need here is the ability to run and the will to mug someone.

I agree, do it at a time when you won’t get in trouble for it, but when people will see it. During the eighth grade formal it looked like my friends and I had planned one, but it was just that we requested The Time Warp and we all did the dance in a circle-ish thing. People stared. So maybe you could do one at a school dance.

@wundayatta Oh, wow. I guess what with the question tags and all, it never occurred to me that it could be something else.
