Does wearing a hat or cap make a man's hair thin or fall out?

Most men, that I have talked to with thinning hair, tell me that wearing a cap or hat is the reason for their hair loss. At first, I agreed with them, until my wife said to me, “honey, you have worn police hats and motorcycle helmets for many years and you still have a head full of hair. I don’t agree with that reason, at all”. I do believe she is correct. Question: so, what makes some men and women lose their hair faster than other people? Are caps and hats the reason or is it something else?
