Why is Minecraft suddenly making my laptop screen go black every time I play it now?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) August 17th, 2011

Every time I play Minecraft (since yesterday, at least), my screen eventually goes blank and I can’t do anything about it other than turn my computer off and back on again. I haven’t had this problem at all before yesterday, and I haven’t changed anything about my computer. It has happened on every video setting, and it is becoming more frequent.

What is causing this, and how can I fix it?

How hot is your computer getting? Sounds like a GPU overheating problem.

@dverhey my laptop has a tendency to get pretty hot, but it has always been that way, and I’ve never had a problem before. I haven’t dusted out my fan recently… would that help?

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard It’s worth a shot. I’d download Speccy and see what the temperatures end up as on the graph there.

Minecraft has a tendency to get my custom desktop really really hot anyway.

Holy shit, my CPU and motherboard are both running at a steady 69 degrees Celcius.

That can’t be good. Thanks for the link… this program is great. Looks like I need to clean my fan.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Yeah, my CPU and mobo never get above 45. That’s probably an issue.

Probably the screen size setting is different. That happened to me when I got a new monitor. Troubleshoot it on your laptop manufacturer’s site.
