Are you taking advantage of the internet?

Asked by rpm_pseud0name (8208points) August 19th, 2011

What are you getting in return for that monthly bill? Are you paying for the constant Facebook status updates? The viral videos? The same five websites you check every day? Do you call it the monthly Fluther bill? :)

I try to discover/learn about eight new things every day online. From the original design of Mt. Rushmore… or that flamingos can drink near boiling water.. to the man-made design of mono-monostatic bodies.

The world is at your fingertips. How do you take advantage of it?

I use the Internet for mostly social reasons at present. It keeps me in touch with close friends who live very far away via instant messaging and email and Skype. I don’t personally use it for exploring knowledge, but I do gain information from it by reading the news throughout the day on several sources. I also use the Internet for entertainment. I read blogs. I look at funny pictures. I read jokes.

I’m happy with what I get from it at present. I love the Internet. I love Fluther.

I stay in touch with family and friends in my hometown and elsewhere via Facebook and email.

I learn stuff just about every day on mentalfloss.com.

I do a ton of research for school, and stay in touch with academic contacts.

I do my banking and pay bills.

I also have tons of fun here on Fluther and all over the place.

I just use other peoples’ networks, so whatever value I receive is well worth it. :P

But mostly I do use it to learn new things and network.

Most definitely. The internet bill mostly saves me gas money, I think.

I bank online- pay bills, make transfers.

I shop online for things so I don’t have to drive to a store to see if they have in stock on my very few days off. Also, being able to price compare online and find online coupons and promo codes is cool! There are things I buy that I can keep price checks on and as the promotions increase, they will revise my orders to reflect the new discounts.

My Netflix subscriptions have been gold. One minimal subscription lets up to 3 different movies play at the same time while logged in. This means mom, kids, me & Mr., everyone can be entertained on the cheap but separate if need be.

Aside from my phone, I’ve never paid for Internet (OPM). From it, I’ve learned just about every goddamned thing that nobody tells you, and some things that most people can’t even imagine as a possibility.

I’d try to learn eight new things every day, but it seems like for every new thing I learn, an old thing disappears.
