Can I make my waist smaller if I'm already thin?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) August 22nd, 2011

I am 5’3 and about 117 pounds. My measurements are 34B-27–38.
I work out three times a week and mostly focus on weight training. I think I’m pretty fit and I have some abs but I would like it if my waist was thinner to get that curvier look. I’m not sure if 27 is as small as my waist goes…because I’ve always had this size since I was 14 (I’m 22 now).
If possible how do I achieve this, lose some pounds?
Some fitness expert online said I can always make it smaller. Is it possible for my waist to get skinnier and go more ‘inward’ so I could have more defined curve between my waist and hips?

You can’t lose weight in specific areas. You can, however, tone or develop muscles in specific areas, but that’s likely to make your waist appear thicker rather than thinner.

poisonedantidote's avatar

I could be wrong, but as far as I know you can not, at least not in a significant way. I suggest increasing pectoral and dorsal muscles to give the illusion of a slimmer waist.

I don’t want to wear a corset…I wanna look better nakey ;) lol

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Corsetry is temporary, and it only works while you’re wearing it.

Ultimately, the answer is no. Your body shape is your body shape. Gaining and losing weight may alter the overall look of your figure, but you can’t spot reduce. Practice good posture and maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen, and I’m sure you look lovely and healthy as you are.

Unless you want to have a rib removed surgically, which is a very bad idea, you are stuck with being young, fit, healthy and of optimum weight.

If you wear the corset tight enough for long enough your body will reshape inclding bones shifting and redistribution of internal organs. This will also reduce both stomach and lung capacity but hey that’s the price of beauty.

Right off the bat, being a guy I can tell you you are already as skinny as is allowable before getting gross. I love the skinny girls, and 117 is starting to get a bit low for me even. Weight training should be adding muscle mass, which makes you heavier than not working out, btw.

But most importantly, no you cannot shrink your waste if it is already down to the bone. Not without surgically altering your body in incredibly unhealthy ways.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@tedd at 5’3”, 117# is a perfectly healthy weight.

chelle21689's avatar

Now that I think about it, I don’t think it’s the waist that makes it not have the curve look but that my love handles aren’t as toned lol. Not saying I’m fat but I just would like to be toned…I guess I’ll try to work more on that and see how that goes. I’m not one of those anorexic girls but I would love to have a fit body…but I know how hard it can be because I love food ^_^ I try to cut out junk and stuff, it’s hard.

Some people have an hour glass shape and some. Don’t. The only way to really cinch your waste in and change it is surgically.

JLeslie's avatar

First. Your measurements are:
36
27
38

Bra size 34 means you likely measure 30 around your back, but with a bra on your measure around your actual bust is 36. That is where the B comes in 36–34.

27 is a very nice size waist for your measurements. You are very hour glass if you don’t know it already. Maybe a little more hip, but you can easily put on a bra with a little extra and you will be 37–27-38. Pretty damn near perfect.

Back in the day supposedly some women removed a rib to make their waists smaller. I don’t recommend it.

How tall are you?

rebbel's avatar

Or make it so your hips get a bit wider/thicker.
That way your waist will look smaller optically.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Corsets are not temporary. You can alter your waist measurement permanently. Wearing corsets to get a smaller waist is known as waist training.

As others have said, you can not spot train to lose inches. @rebbel is on to something. Many weight lifters build their shoulders and their glutes to make their v-taper appear smaller.

I don’t think there is much you can do about your waist. Not sure why you’d even want to change it. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, unfortunately insecurity just comes in one big one size fits all box (in a brown paper wrapper)

Now, while you are still young, would be a good time to learn to accept your body and be comfortable in your own skin instead of spending the rest of your life hating your body, like so many of us have done. Don’t let a bad body image take up space in your head.

You are healthy and normal and unique. Be happy about who you are, embrace your self and don’t let anybody tell you that you need to be altered or fixed or changed. And don’t be your own worst enemy.

Aethelflaed's avatar

The hourglass figure you’re looking for is largely a lie.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@SpatzieLover I’m not so sure. I seem to recall reading a book about it, in which it said the results were semi-permanent, at best. Ultimately, because the waist slimming is due to a combination of dedicated and constant compression, leading to muscular atrophy.. and weight loss, because of a reduced ability to eat while laced. The waist will hold shape for a while, but without continued wear of the garment, the torso will regain muscle tone and the body will revert.
Though, I suppose if the OP wants to dedicate 23 hours a day to wearing a corset, it’s a feasible solution.. since it should hold shape, at least temporarily.

Your body sounds great as it is. The biggest sex organ is the brain. Just relax and use what you’ve got with confidence and attitude.

chelle21689's avatar

36 B is too big for me lol. I’ve been measured…I’m a 34B. But thanks guys. I would love a smaller waist but I’m not going to move mountains for it.

Kardamom's avatar

@chelle21689 Most fellows are going to enjoy moving your mountains and not even have a thought in their head about your proportions. LOL.

JLeslie's avatar

Who suggested 36B? Are you talking about my comment. I am explaining that 34B is 36 in the old 36–26-36 context.

Bra size is calculated by measuring around the back where the band goes and adding 4 or 5 depending on the brand. So, likely you measure 30 inches where the band goes around your back, add four, that is how the sales person came up with bra size 34. Then measuring around your back where your breasts are if the actual measure is 35 you are an A, 36 a B. So likely if you pull out a measure tape and measure around your boobs you measure 36 inches, not to be confused with your bra size that is a 34.

A woman who wears a 32 D is also 36.

Are you long waisted to where your body trunk is longer than your legs? If so then you will always look more straight up and down with the exception of your hips.

That I know of, there are no specific areas to make just the muscles at your waist contract further in on an already firm/toned stomach.

gailcalled's avatar

Wear a belt at the waistline and pull it one notch tighter than is comfortable.

FluffyChicken's avatar

Your measurements are perfect. Why would you want to change perfection?

Making your bust and hips look a little wider with a padded bra or flattering pantscould give the illusion of a slimmer waist though.

I wish my waist was 27

Unclepepsi's avatar

Why would you want to get any smaller than that. You are a very good weight for your height. I am sure you are beautiful inside and out. Don’t get caught up in this Hollywood beauty trend where everyone needs to bee a size 4. If you are in your twenty’s you should not be able to shop the children’s section. Be happy with you.

chelle21689's avatar

I’m not trying to get smaller or lose weight. I like my weight and I don’t like being too thin but it’s just I’d like a more curvy looking figure instead of straight.

gailcalled's avatar

I’d like to be younger and have a beanpole body so I can wear jeans that hang on my hips; it so isn’t going to happen. Stop wasting your energy and consider becoming a little less self-absorbed. Help an old lady across the street or come and weed my garden for me.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I thought more about this and came up with some stuff, maybe helpful, maybe tosh:

Your have a very small waist in proportion to your hips so you can wear belts of any style. If you choose slightly higher waist styles of skirts, shorts and pants/jeans then you can draw attention to that tiny waist.

Choose tops that have dimension to them to bring the eyes up when people look at your outfit. Your wide hips are your anchor, you’ve got your hourglass foundation and just need to dress it up. Wrap/foldover style tops with ruching- tops with a flowy layer over a fitted one- tops with breast pockets or ruffling on the yoke, you can take advantage of all these and not look puffed up.

SpatzieLover's avatar

^agree with @Neizvestnaya and with @gailcalled.

I find pencil skirts flatter my short stature and bring attention to my hourglass figure which you also have @chelle21689…you just need to play it up a bit

JLeslie's avatar

@chelle21689 Why not just wear a bra that has a little cookie in it? Not the bras that squoosh you together and push you up, but those that give you a little more? And, the clothes you wear can really affect your shape. Don’t wear anything very boxy, I recommend not earing crop or capri pants. Also, wear tops that lengthen your torsoe. Many many tops amd dresses have the “waist” up on the rib cage, steer clear of those, they shorten your waist. Wear a three inch heal, it pushes your bum out a little and lengthens the legs. When you walk, walk putting your foot in front of the center of you, not in front of the leg.

chelle21689's avatar

JLeslie, well I mean in clothing I am fine with my body. But when you wear a bikin it’s different :P

chelle21689's avatar

I really hate how some people are taking it as mean wanting to be SKINNIER and thin. It’s not about me being skinnier and losing weight. I like my weight, it’s just the waist lol.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@chelle21689 I understand your desire perfectly. Wrap dresses are also very flattering.

The fact that you can wear a bikini is a good thing. =) There are styles that are more flattering. Generally I chose one with a higher cut at the thigh to elongated the legs.

JLeslie's avatar

Mean? Why do you say mean?

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@chelle21689: In bikinis then wear a top that has a crossover or gathered cup style instead of the simple triangle fabric piece on a string. A band that goes under the bust will be more flattering than a string, same for what ties behind your neck or the “bra” straps. Lot of bikini tops come with inner pockets for lightweight liners to mask nipple color showing through or for you to add thicker foam or silicone inserts that give a little shape and lift to the bust.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@chelle21689 You’re going from a 27 inch waist to a 38 inch hip, that should make for a nice curve. Maybe work the upper body a little to make it more defined and add a little curve that way.

JLeslie's avatar

For bikinis I recomend a bra style top that has a cookie in it, and bottoms that are not very low rise and straight across, but that have a little french cut to it. The very straight across low rise show the little bit of fat that can be right above the hip bone or the natural roundness most women have where our wombs are below the belly button. If these things stand out to you, wearing a more french style bottom should be a favorable alternative.

chelle21689's avatar

It’s natural for women to have these I guess and it’s a common “problem” area. I don’t think it’s worth starving myself and worrying too much for just to look like Shakira’s awesome bestest abs ever….....I think lol. Thanks everyone.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh, talking about Shakira….belly dancing. That will tone your midriff. Of course, you need to be lean to see the tone, but it sounds like you are a good weight.
