Anyone have experience with ozone generators? Do you use them to purify the air or for your water?

Has it improved your health especially when used to purify water?

We use one in our apartments when someone has smoked. Never used it for water, but unless the tar and nicotine have seeped into the drywall behind the paint it works pretty good to clean the air. We leave it sit in an empty apartment for 24–48 hours.

Ozone is toxic to the human body and even the US EPA gives Ozone generators a big thumbs down. We had one here at work and I felt like I was drowning in chlorine. It is now a bookend on top our filing cabinet.

“There is evidence to show that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals.”

We put it in a VACANT apartment, then air it out after it is done. (before anyone stays in there for any amount of time. )

@Cruiser got it. Ozone generators are very dangerous. When I did volunteer work at the camden aquarium they had a couple that they used to use to keep the water clean. They said it worked extremely well but wasnt worth all the health risks.

@Judi We do the exact same thing with vacants. Here in the area, we also get basement backups/flooding. After a good suction from a carpet cleaner, we’ll set up the ozone machine for a good 36–48hrs.

Best thing to do is clean the carpet and then throw some baking soda on it after its dry and let it sit for a few hours. Then go back and vacuum. Also change the a/c filter to a hepa filter and let it run a bit and open the windows so it blows the air out of the rooms.
If the carpet still smells like smoke than try putting some vinegar in the water tank to clean the carpet. Test it out in a small area first. Once the vinegar dries the smell will disappear and take anything with it. I tried it once on a high traffic area that always gets filthy quickly after cleaning and it not only removed the stains but it removed the musty smell it had as well.
