Colleges in Virgina?

Asked by icehky06 (896points) August 30th, 2011

I’m from MA and I’m going to be a senior this year. I’m looking for a school in Virgina. Ideally I would want one a few minutes away from a beach and for it to have a field hockey team. Help!

Here is a list of universities and colleges in Virginia. The closest ones to the beach are the ones in Newport News, Hampton (not Hampton-Sydney), Norfolk, and possibly Williamsburg (but it’s pushing it.) That leaves you with five, possibly six choices. None of them are a few minutes away from a beach.

As for which ones offer field hockey, these do: Christopher Newport University, William & Mary, Old Dominion, and Virginia Wesleyan College. If you are willing to forego the beach, there are plenty of schools in Va. that have a field hockey team.

You got a really good answer from @Pied_Pfeffer. I would just add that UVA is considered a public Ivy, or was in my day.

I wonder why Virginia?

Remember that if you are only there during the regular school year, it will be too cold for the beach almost the entire time you are there. You might get 4 weeks at most.

By any chance did you mean a college in a virgin, vagina?
Courses there are held off to further notice. But in case you meant Virginia, than I would agree with @Pied_Pfeffer

@Pandora Good catch. I missed spotting the OP’s typo.

@JLeslie UVa. has never been considered an Ivy League university. The only people that might consider it a ‘public Ivy’ are people who consider students or faculty snooty. Five family members have graduated from there, and they are all very down to earth.

I wonder ‘Why Virginia?’ as well. Since the OP hasn’t responded yet, it could very well be the desire for a change of climate, exposure to another US culture, Virginia colleges typically have a field hockey team, and most of them have a fairly good reputation.

As for the desire to be close to a beach, there are a number of reasons why one would want the accessibility. The air temperature at Va. Beach is reasonably decent year round, especially for someone from MA. Va. Beach averate air and water temperatures. Beaches are great for running and all sorts of exercise. They are also great for meditation, bird-watching, shell-seeking, oceanic interests, etc.

@Pied_Pfeffer Here is the list. I double checked because after your answer I questioned my memory. It isn’t about being snooty. You’re sounding southern there, some sort of association with northeast ivy’s and being snobs or elitists.

Thanks for answering this, the answers have been great. Why Virgina? Kinda a broad question don’t you think? I’m 17 and from MA, I’ve vacationed in Vigina many time before and fell in love with it. I’m just a teenager, I’ll change my mind a billion times. Thanks again!

@JLeslie Wow…thanks for the link. I had no idea that a Public Ivy category existed, only the official Ivy League universities.

As for the ‘snootiness’ comment, it had nothing to do with northern universities, just UVa. And it wasn’t my perception, but that of some friends who toured the campus while looking for a college to attend. I don’t know why they thought this way…maybe because people there dressed very nicely (preppy was in style). Maybe it was because they didn’t get accepted. :)

@icehky06 You are more than welcome. Virginia is a beautiful state, and it’s more milder weather is a bonus. Do you know what field(s) of study you are interested in yet?

@Pied_Pfeffer yes! I plan to major in Biology and minor in Psychology.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Good! That should help you narrow the search. The four initially posted all have majors/minors in those fields. My niece graduated from W&M in biology and is now a doctor. She loved it there.

That’s so impressive, good for her. I’ve been lookin at University of Mary Washington. Do you know anything about it?

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Yup. Another niece graduated from there last year with a major in Biology. She’s now working at a local safari with the animals. She also did some short-term apprenticeships that were botany related. She loved her time at Mary Washington.

@Pied_Pfeffer Bad assumption on my part there, sorry for that. Ivy Leagues are in the northeast though, that is why I made the incorrect generalization. I understand where you were coming from now.
