How long will unrefrigerated hard-boiled eggs stay good?

Asked by srmorgan (6773points) September 1st, 2011

I made some hard-boiled eggs yesterday and did not stick them in the refrigerator. So that have sat out on the counter now for a day and a half. They are still in the shell.

Are they ok to stick back in the fridge and have for breakfast tomorrow?

No no no…. A day and a half for eggs ? I’d throw them away definitely

I would eat the hard-boiled eggs a few hours after I made them at the latest.

Nooooo, no. Throw them away.
I think 4 hours is the recommended maximum time without refrigeration for eggs and dairy.

How do they smell?

From the United States Dept. of Agriculture:

When shell eggs are hard-cooked, the protective coating is washed away, leaving open pores in the shell where harmful bacteria could enter. Be sure to refrigerate eggs within two hours of cooking and use them within a week. Check your refrigerator temperature with an appliance thermometer and adjust the refrigerator temperature to 40°F (Fahrenheit) or below. Source

No, absolutely not. Always put them in fridge after running cold water over them to get them to room temprerature. Don’t even leave them for hours, 1½ days, is too too long.

No idea. Eat one and get back to us. That would be a good thing to know.

@josie I’ve done it. The eggs sat cooling in the pot on a turned off burner overnight (I forgot about them) and then were refrigerated the next day. No bodily repercussions when consumed. I’m not willing to recommend it as safe though.

Guess I better toss them…..............

For the cost of eggs vs. the cost of potentially ending up with some intestinal ailment, that seems like the right choice. While I’ve taken the risk, I’m still a fool that thinks she is invincible.
