Can you cheer me up with some inspiring/funny/feel-good stories?

Asked by Frankie (4032points) September 2nd, 2011

So today is my birthday, and I’m feeling pretty down. I hate my job to the point where the stress and dread makes me physically ill; the man I had been dating for seven months and cared for very deeply moved across the country almost three weeks ago for a teaching gig at a university in the city that happens to be the focus of his dissertation (i.e., despite our relationship, there was no way he could pass up this kind of opportunity); I’m having an extremely difficult time with the transition from college to “real life,” and now, to top it all off, my best friend is irrationally upset with me and will not be around for my birthday.

I have fun plans to go out with my sister and some friends tonight and tomorrow, but I’m still feeling bummed about everything, and it all is compounded by the fact that my best friend won’t be here for me. Uplifting and inspiring stories always make me feel better, and rather than just do a google search for “Chicken Soup”-type stories, I’d like to hear your own personal tales of hope, joy, humor, etc…because personal stories are always better! And I’m sure other members besides me will enjoy them :) Thanks!

Fresh out of feel good stories. However this video put a smile on my face this morning.

Happy B-day! And, FWIW, most jobs suck. Just remember, they don’t call it work for nothing!

Thanks @YoBob, that was great!

Also, the stories don’t necessarily have to be “feel-good”...relating something funny that happened to you or that you saw the other day works too! Anything that could make you smile.

I have no stories of inspiration. However, I can offer you a true story of strange thing that happened to me on my birthday many years ago. I was had moved out to California with my girlfriend who worked all the time so I never saw her. I knew I was going to spend my birthday alone and really didn’t want to make any food in my apartment, so I decided to hit a sub shop I had never been to.
I walked in and there was a very loud band playing in the corner of this small place. When I walked up to the register to order, I immediately noticed a photo of myself when I was 12 years old taped to the register. Yep. Not someone who looked like me. It was the portrait taken for 8th grade. My legs got all wobbly, I couldn’t hear the guy at the register talking to me, and I swear I lost my mind for a minute. It was very surreal.
“This is me!!?!” I screamed to the guy over the loud music. He shrugged his shoulders. “This is me!! How did you get this??” He just shrugged his shoulders. I ordered an eggplant sub, grabbed the photo, paid, and walked back to my empty apartment in a complete daze. What the f*ck? I couldn’t make any sense of it.

Late that night when my girlfriend got home, we figured it out. She had a few photos of me when I was a kid in her bag, and had visited that sub shop a month or two before and must have dropped it. In a way, I wish I hadn’t figured it out. It had so screwed with my mind, I wish it had gone unsolved.

Sometimes all you need to be happy is to catch a ball.

Also, try browsing other photos in this website. It might cheer you up. These photos tell stories themselves.

@tom_g that is crazy! Thanks for sharing that…so weird that they would tape a picture of a random kid to their register…

@mazingerz88 unfortunately, the pictures don’t want to load on my phone, so I’ll have to check out the link when I get home…something to look forward to!

Just heard that my 2 year old grandson Jake calls all his friends by their names but his best friend Wilson he calls “Friend.” Jake is about to move away to Paris so that story both cheers and saddens me.

We just bought a puppy he’s adorable and I am considering adding a one year old pup from the same breeder to our pack. The thing is, the pup was has a birth injury and is missing a foot. She will most likely need a SAHM household. We’re considering making alterations to our porch-etc for her.

The breeder sent me this vieo today of a dog in a similar predicament. It’s made me smile all day.

Happy Birthday Frankie!

The Tall Tale Of The Tallest Beer I Had Ever Seen (circa 1979): I was thumbing out west in some desert or another; I was hot and thirsty and desperate to get out of the sun. You know I was happy when my ride finally came by. The driver surmised that I was dehydrated; after fishing around with one eye on the road and one hand on the wheel, he passed me a cold beer. It was not any ordinary beer, no sir, it was the tallest beer I had ever seen. Normally, I don’t drink beer (can’t get around the bad taste), but I was mighty thirsty, so I opened her up. I had not finished it when the driver informed me he had taken me as far as he could. Since he was going to turn off the highway, he dropped me in the middle of nowhere. I got out, turned and set my bag down, then turned back to wave goodbye. The man was already gone, but the space was not empty by a long shot. In his place sat a State Trooper, complete with dark glasses. He looked at me over the rims, or rather, he looked at me holding the tallest beer in the world, and wagged his finger from side to side. Now, I’m not always a stickler for the letter of the law, but at that particular moment I was all about obeying the law. Without a second thought, I tossed the can over my shoulder, and won the Trooper’s approval. When he drove away, I turned to see where it landed. I was just curious. Since the middle of nowhere was in California, the flora along the highways was thick and lush. To my amusement, the can had landed upright in the overgrowth, and not a drop had been spilled. I was able to finish the drink.

One thing you can do with the job you are not that fond of is look for the brighter side of things and look at it as a stepping stone. Look at what you are learning from it and strive to learn as much as you can from the company you are working for. What then can happen is you gain knowlege to do something you will like better and then you learn from the new job what you can and then move up to something better. I did things that way and by not going to college because my father died and taking out student loans scared me so I used what I could to make career advancements by taking advantage of all learning I could. I was well on my way to becoming a project manager for the company I was working for when my daughter became too sick to go to daycare and I ended up leaving after my FMLA ran out but in my last postion I was hired to be their project person for the System Admin Group but at all times I took and learned as much as I could possibly learn from the people who went to school for it. I got my Six Sigma Greenbelt from the company which not everyone is able to acomplish even the project managers they have working for them. But I was able to find a way to get a project out of something I was working on and the bank sent me for greenbelt training along with being the project lead.

Just find your target of what type of career will make you happy then aim in that direction and don’t let it stop you till you are so happy and proud of your acomplishments.
