I've been hearing a lot about African mangoes helping with weight loss - is it true?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) September 9th, 2011

I’m hearing crazy stuff about people taking a pill containing some extracts from African mangoes and dropping 28 pounds in a month with no change in eating or workout habits.

I’m obviously skeptical, but a google search only returns promotional websites touting its effectiveness. Anyone know anything about the truth of these claims?

A lot of plant-based compounds seem to have beneficial effects like that, particularly in fruits. It’s a wonder that more people don’t just say “Hey, maybe I should just eat a lot of fruit.”

Crap, now I want fruit. I think I’m going to go gather a bunch tomorrow. :)

Sure. If you take my magic pill and follow a sensible regimen of cutting calories and my patented easy-exercise program you, too, can lose weight and look great!

It’s not really the magic pill. But fruit is good for you, in moderation. (In abundant moderation, in fact.)

Haha…at first glance I thought this said ” African MONGOOSE!”
Yep, the African Mongoose diet, lose weight killing Cobras. lol
I’ve never heard of this, yet anyway. I would’‘t get too excited. The best weight loss plan is eat less, move more. Most gimmicks are just that.

You could try chewing Coca leaves. Have you been wanting to visit Bolivia? haha ;-)

The only way it will help you lose weight is if it prevents you from putting more caloric foods into your mouth.

“Oh, sorry. I can’t eat that hot fudge sundae because I am still chewing on my African mango.”

In the first place, the African mango is not a mango at all. If you google “dika bread” you will get much information about this fruit. As for its medicinal properties, I suspect these are akin to those of the noni fruit. The promotion sounds like a scam.

I don’t know what would be the difference, but regular mangos have a lot of fiber and can give you the runs if you eat a lot of them. Of course that is one way to lose weight. So its probably true, only what you will be loosing after a while will be any nutrients you take in.
Most of those diet fruit juices only do just that. They make you flush your weight away.
Just looked at the picture. It looks like any other mango. There is one other factor. Mangos are pretty filling. I know if I eat one whole one I can skip lunch. So if a person is eating more fruit than normal than they aren’t eating anything really fattening. If we really ate fruits and vegetables daily like we are suppose to than the weight would come off.
One of the articles a women claims to have lossed 25 lbs in 5 months. Thats just slightly under 1.5 lb a week. That is possible with just her changing her diet and eating healthy. And you don’t have to shit your brains out.

No, complete shenanigans!

Bogus. The only thing that really helps is reducing calories moderately over a longer period of time combined with regular exercise.

@mattbrowne: Or bench-pressing crates of African mangoes.
