Do you, or anyone you know, change the colors in their house with the change of season?

Asked by JLeslie (65402points) September 13th, 2011

I was just talking about this with my husband. My grandma had furniture covers that she put on during the winter months. They were a heavier fabric, made to fit the furniture, probably came with it when she first ordered it many years ago. The covers were like a velvet I think, and were a warm color. Gave the room a fall look. The area rug in the room worked with both the regular fabric color of the furniture and the covers.

I love the idea. I wondered if many people did this back in the day, and if anyone does it now.

I have thought about getting very neutral furniture and changing pillows, even curtains, place mats, etc at whim or for parties.

My girl has a complete set of window clings and decor for each season.

I use to change my living room decor Winter and Summer. Dark and neutral tones (November-May) using pillows, throw rugs, curtains and flower arrangements. That was when I was young and had my own duplex. Now days with a big house I have the windows washed twice a year. In the Spring/Summer to let the beautiful sunshine in, and at the end of Autumn. Clean windows help change the colors in house and that’s good enough for me.:>

I don’t know many people that have the time or money to do something so…...cosmetic.

One of my friends does something similar, though she’s not replacing things like drapes and pillows (or furniture covers!). She does have seasonal decor for every season though. Things like autumn leaf wreaths and pumpkin knickknacks for fall, snow or Christmas related stuff for winter, etc. She sprinkles the stuff in all over the house, inside and out. Myself, I really don’t have the energy. I’m lucky if I get the Christmas tree up in time! Thank goodness the kids help me with that one, and setting out the few Christmas decor items I do have.

I had a friend who did this. She was in her 80’s at the time I knew her.She would ask me to help her change the decorations from season to season. Not just holiday things. She would change much of her decor.
It looked like a new place when we got done.Yep,she had neutral furniture, which made it alot easier,I imagine

I do not. I have heard of doing it though.

I think it is a neat idea – the closest I have had contact with is my parents-in-law who insisted on a good spring and fall cleaning for the house, can you imagine that in this fast paced world? However, I know from the popularity of stores such as Michaels that there is more of a trend to honoring the seasons through decor. Halloween is sure popular right now!

I actually think of holiday decor as a different thing, but it is in the same category I guess? My grandmother never had any holiday decor at all.

Yes, my crazy grandma. She repaints the walls, changes the rugs, the bedding, the curtains, furniture covers, table settings, etc.

My boyfriends mother does. She has enough furniture and decorations for several houses, because she changes the decor so much with the season + her moods. I like to get a room the way I like it and leave it that way, just changing out little things here and there as I can afford to do so.
