Addicts/former addicts: what's it like to go through withdrawl?

Asked by FutureMemory (24753points) September 17th, 2011

I’m talking about drugs. Not missing your sweetheart, or being deprived of your favorite TV show. I’m talking about cocaine, heroin, meth. The hard stuff.

I am looking personal experiences only. Please don’t tell me what you learned in school, or what your cousin went through.

Proceed.

Redacted. Cigarettes probably don’t count.

Argh I spelled ‘withdrawal’ incorrectly, how did I miss that?

My girlfriend straight up quit, in December cold turkey, I didn’t force her to or whatever. She was doing cocaine, (not crack) some fine cocaine. Now she didn’t have like Ray Charles symptom where she had to throw up and be stuck in a bed. She did get tired more often as she also had quit coffee. So she essentially just came back to earth. However, she seems to have a headache 4 days out of the week now.

I can’t speak to really hard stuff, but I’ve had some experience getting off anti-depressants and anti-anxiety. I made the mistake of deciding to quit taking my meds cold turkey, and I had the following:

- Feelings of “energy” flowing through my body… like electrical impulses racing from by brain to my hands and feet (not in any way enjoyable)
– Complete inability to sleep
– Inability to turn off my brain (for lack of a better term)
– Panic attacks (possibly associated with lack of sleep) that convinced me I was going insane, ie. fear that if I stopped talking I would lose ability to speak

I went back on the meds and eventually used a step-down approach, which was much easier. I can’t imagine coming off an opiate or meth.
