Is getting drunk off Gin a good experience?

Asked by elchoopanebre (3079points) May 8th, 2008

I recently sipped a little gin and thought it tasted horrible. Also the people I was with said getting drunk off gin makes almost everyone sick. Anyone here like it and have a different experience with it?

Also, don’t they put flowers in it and herbs and stuff?

Straight gin is horrible. I usually mix it with concentrated pink lemonade and substitute some of the water with gin. It is actually pretty good.

I have never gotten sick from it. I did run around naked once after drinking a large amount of it. I think that made the other people I was with sick.

The last time I got drunk off of gin I vomitted in my sleep… good thing I was on my stomach. I haven’t messed with gin since then. ;)

Gin is great! Mix with pink grape fruit juice, bitter lemon, pineapple juice or tonic…....it’s bitter enough that you won’t get the sickly sweet thing going on.

If you like olives, there’s always gin martini’s, but I’m not a fan of those.

Gin is sort of an acquired taste. And yes, it is made with juniper berries which gives it its characteristic taste. Personally, I love it. Especially gin martinis. But as for getting drunk, I have no idea. What’s the point in getting drunk? I think getting drunk off of anything would make you sick.

I went through a brief gin & tonic phase. I do recall particularly wicked hangovers the next day, I really don’t drink the stuff anymore. I try not to drink anything that’s a distilled version of something I wouldn’t eat (exception being tequila).

I second Les. Wait until your taste buds are ready for it.

I love Gin Martinis without vermouth. So I guess I just love Gin. Yes it has herbs in it for flavor and I never get sick from it.

How old are you?

@skfinkel

Haha, that’s beside the point.

Maybe, and maybe not.

Bombay Saphire straight up…....yummy! Not getting drunk on it, but a good cocktail while ordering appetizers.

The only time I’ve ever drank gin i drank far far to much.
I smelt like a pine tree for the next few day.
Moderation wasn’t in my vocabulary at that time

Gin is one of the few liquors I won’t drink straight. I do like it though. It makes a tasty mix drink and gets me drunk pretty quick if that’s what I’m going for.

Fuck no it’s not. Gin is basically vodka with botanicals added. Ones like Junipero and Hendrick’s are good if you want to sip a martini, but being drunk off gin is trouble.

Stick with this stuff. It’s much safer.

@peedub~Don Julio is fantastic.

A Gin & Tonic was the first drink I ever had… even before beer. I hated it at first, but I got used to it. I’ve only gotten sick from drinking once and it wasn’t when I was drinking gin. So my answer is that I’ve never had a bad experience from drinking gin.

@peedub- come on man, its not vodka. I can’t stand vodka. I’d go without a drink before I picked up a vodka drink. Gin is like 10 times better. Plus I’ve heard both my grandma and snoop dog talk about it. How can you go wrong there?

Don’t misunderstand though, gin is in NO WAY on my top list of drinks, but its doable.

Sorry dude, but it’s true:

“Distilled gin is made by redistilling white grain spirit which has been flavoured with juniper berries. Compound gin is made by flavouring neutral grain spirit with juniper berries without redistilling and can be considered a flavoured vodka.”

-A la Wiki.

Though not always made from grain, vodka is essentially nothing more than a neutral grain spirit. It’s the added botanicals that make gin not taste like rubbing alcohol.
You’re right it’s not exactly vodka, it’s vodka made less pure.

I do like it better. I’m not too big on sipping vodka, but gin is another story. It’s also way more classic. There’s a famous bar in San Francisco called Aub Zam Zam. It’s Moroccan-themed and was big in the mid-century, heyday of the martini. Apparently the owner Bruno was a sort of martini “nazi”. In all the years he was still around, if someone tried to order a vodka, or non-gin martini they were instantly booted, no joke.

Getting drunk on anything is never a good experience.

Gin won’t make you any sicker than other forms of alcoholic beverage. In fact, clear drinks, such as vodka and gin contain few cogeners, which tend to make some people sick and contribute to hangovers. The best way to avoid getting sick is to drink in moderation or not at all.
