Are home-printed store coupons in our future?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) September 19th, 2011

Marlboro cigarettes emailed me a $3 off coupon for a carton of Marlboro cigarettes. I printed the coupon and took the whole page, just in case there were questions of acceptance at the store. I was right. This store would not accept my $3 off coupon for a carton of Marlboro. I advised the clerk that this is the future with coupons and they need to learn to accept them. My name was on the coupon, but they still refused to take it. Question: if you were in this situation, what would you have told the store clerk that refused to take your $3 dollar off coupon?

This is the present with coupons. As I understand it, stores are not required to take coupons, it’s just good business. If it’s printed at home and has a bar code that the store is able to scan, that helps with authenticity, but smaller retailers often won’t take home printed coupons because they can’t redeem them with the manufacturer without the proper software in their registers. If there’s no bar code, they really have no way of telling if it’s bogus or not. In a case like that, maybe a larger retailer would take it.

I have dealt with this as well. Now I usually don’t even bother with the print at home coupons.

I’d get ahold of Philip Morris and tell them the coupon didn’t work.

@zenvelo Bet they send more out ; ) I’ve worked in retail, if the coupon did not scan we did not accept it (I believe the business did not get reimbursed for it).

I’m wondering if you still bought the smokes.

Heck, none of our grocery stores or Walmarts accept any computer coupons for anything, ever.

@SpatzieLover Safeway takes them. You could try there if you’re near one.

We have no Safeway…I wish someone would take them. It was great when they did!

@SpatzieLover You must have really pissed Wal-Mart off : ( they take everything.

@EnchantingEla Not by us. They have a written store policy not to take any “print-out” coupons. It really sucks.

@SpatzieLover Shop Targe` ; )

@EnchantingEla Ahhh…Thank you! I didn’t even think of using them there. Ours is getting remodeled & will carry groceries now…OOoooh

Whole Foods sends out a link to store coupons. One can print whichever coupons one wants as many times as one wishes.

@SpatzieLover Ooooooo….. a Su-per Targe`..... nice!

Well I’d ask that clerks to introduce me to his boss so he can make me understand why can’t I use it. It’s not PM fault but the store policy. But I’d like to hear why they wouldn’t take/accept it.
