Are there any good art schools near Carlsbad, Ca?

Asked by blackandwhite (30points) October 6th, 2011

I am planning on moving to California soon and I will be living in Carlsbad for a while. I was planning on attending the Art Institute of California/San Diego but I am not sure if that’s close enough to where I will be. I’m looking for a major related to game art or illustration. Any ideas?

I’d commute the other way (north) instead. LA commute would be worse than SD, but you’d have better options.

UCLA has a good Arts & Architecture program.
And there’s the Art Center in Pasadena.

EDIT: I take that back. That’s a crazy commute. Just move closer to LA if possible. Carlsbad is nice if you plan on bumming around on the beach. Otherwise, there’s not too much else going on culture-wise.

I live in SD. From Carlsbad, are you not interested in SDSU commute? They have a great Multi Media Program. One of the rare CSU’s to offer it as a B.A. Also I’m not too sure but San Marcos is closer to Carlsbad than SDSU. The art institute is actually in Mission Valley, at least that’s what I remember, and that’s as far away from Carlsbad as SDSU. Anyways, when it comes down to art as a major, just remember its all about the power of your portfolio, and your networking skills. There are tons of great artist but many have social deficiencies. There are also tons of community colleges in San Diego.

@Nimis Hawk was native to Carlsbad. But you’re right LA is more of a hot spot for the arts. San Diego is the weirdest conservative town in the U.S. I think its because everyone is watching eachother alot of ex Navy end up staying here, slowly but surely their kids (me included) are the liberal faces of San Diego. Downtown SD is coming up though, should you decide to stay. @blackandwhite

It’s not just art culture, there’s a lot more going on gaming-wise too.
Activision, Blizzard and Pandemic are all in or around LA somewhere.
More internship opportunities and network-building.

@Nimis Hmm, I thought Blizzard was HQ’d in Austin, Texas ?

@dreamwolf They have a studio out there, but I think they’re HQ’d in OC somewhere.
Though I could never, in good conscience, recommend that anyone live in OC. [smirk]
