Which would be the best towing option?

Asked by rojo (24179points) October 7th, 2011

In towing a small travel trailer (about 2000 lbs) which would be the more fuel efficient:
A bigger truck, think Ford F-250 with an 8-cyl engine (14–16 mpg), or a smaller truck (18–22 mpg) with a 6 cyl (Toyota Tacoma or equiv.). Anyone know any easy formulas for calculating such?

you are either going to work the big truck easy, or work the small truck hard. the mileage will be close to the same, however wear and tear will be a lot more on the small truck, so I would use the ford.

If you use the Ford get a diesel. Cost up front may be several thousand dollars, will tow easy. Better fuel MPG.

When comparing gas vs. Diesel rather than comparing MPG, you should look at cost per mile.

Desiels MPG does not change nearly as much as a gasoline motor when towing.

You did not mention safety. I had rather drive the big truck, when towing a 2,000 lb. trailer. You will feel more confident for your safety sake.

The mileage may be a little less, but its worth it for your safety.

Is this a one-shot move? Or will you be moving the trailer frequently on various camping trips? Are you moving on more or less level ground, or will you be hauling through mountain passes and over rough terrain? (At least as rough as the trailer can stand, anyway.)

Is the truck borrowed, rented, used only to move the trailer? Is it only to be used in “this” move?

In any case, I’d want the bigger vehicle for this purpose. I once attempted to tow a heavier travel trailer through the Rockies with a ¾-ton Ford F-250… with a straight-six 300 CID engine. It was a great truck and engine most of the time, but for the attempt to clear the Rockies at Eisenhower Pass it was insufficient. I ended up driving through Wyoming, where the grade wasn’t as steep.

i would go for the bigger truck since it will assure my tires of not wearing fast. the torque o the bigger car is also higher .You will also be able to attach any hitch on the bigger truck.
