How tall was Jesus?

Asked by saint (3975points) October 7th, 2011

People seem to recognize his face on potato chips and burned toast. So that must mean that they know a lot about what he looked like.
Does anybody know how tall he was?

If the Shroud of Turin weren’t a proven crock, then maybe we’d know. According to prophecy at least, there wouldn’t have been anything especially eye-catching about him: “For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 55:2) I would guess that would apply to his stature, as well.

But as quoted by Eisler (p. 467) Josephus in his Halosis II described Jesus as follows: “a man of simple appearance, mature age, small stature, three cubits high [4 ft 6 in; 137 cm], hunchbacked, with a long face, long nose, and meeting eyebrows, so that they who see him might be affrighted, with scanty hair (but) with a parting in the middle of his head, after the manner of the Nazirites, and with an undeveloped beard.”source

Josephus should not be relied upon too closely. He was aligned with the Pharisiac Jews and was writing to convince the Romans that good Jews were not their enemies; only those Jews who followed the new-fangled cults were a problem to their ways of life. It is no surprise at all he declares Jesus to be very scary looking.

Wikipedia on his work, The Jewish War:
Rather, he blames the Jewish War on what he calls ‘unrepresentative and over-zealous fanatics’ among the Jews, who led the masses away from their traditional aristocratic leaders (like himself), with disastrous results.
