Can anyone tell me more about the PU surgery my cat had last night?

Asked by spykenij (1831points) October 7th, 2011

What is he going through, what kinds of issues could he have afterwards and what is the best after care things I can do for him?

He absolutely must wear his e-collar! If he won’t eat with it on, you can take it off while you are supervising him, but if left unattended, he will chew out his sutures and require another surgery.

The area of his surgery is extremely vascular, so bleeding is common post-op. A bit of blood is normal – lots of blood indicates an immediate trip to the vet.

He may have blood tinged urine (and leakage) for 3–5 days, but you need to carefully monitor his urination for the first several days. Rarely, a blood clot will create an obstruction and keep him from urinating, so keep an eye out.

Use shredded paper or Yesterday’s News litter. Clay litter will stick to the wound.

Because of the bleeding and his pain level, you may want to restrict him to a small room (like a bathroom). Hopefully your vet is forward thinking enough to provide adequate pain control.

Get thorough discharge instructions form your vet and make sure to ask questions about anything that you don’t understand.

@XOIIO – I did. A vet did the surgery, but I want to make sure this vet is not trying to have my boy up there multiple times after fixing the initial problem. I just want to be absolutely sure and gather as much feedback to make this as comfortable as possible for him. I don’t always trust vets to tell you everything. I want this to go right the 1st time

@syz – Thank you for the info. I will definitely keep all this in mind to make sure my boy gets through this ok.

@spykenij No vet worthy of the vocation would deliberately inflict harm on your pet by withholding information. That is NOT how healers want to make their money. It’s much more rewarding to have a satisfactory outcome and happy clients.

I’ve seen many cats survive this procedure and return to normal kitty lives. Please follow your vet’s advice and @syz as well. My thoughts are with you and your boy for a full and speedy recovery.

Thank you. I do definitely plan on doing what the vet suggests, and that’s not exactly what I am saying; however, the place is a rat’s nest in the ghetto. I used to go to this guy when I 1st moved down to Columbus, Ohio gag and I had to go back to him because I trusted him with my other cat God, rest his sweet, sweet soul and I guess I’m just worried about him state of mind and wish I could protect him more from everything. I hope he feels good from the meds and isn’t too scared. He is a big sissy. I maxed out cards to do this because it was that or put him down and that is not going to happen if I can help it (didn’t have a job for 3 yrs because I have a chronic pain condition and managed to not go bankrupt…so far). This is my kiddie. I know a lot of people don’t understand the love another human can have for a cat, just as a parent does for their own kid, but he is my baby and always will be.

I really do understand @spykenij. My heart goes out to you, truly. I know what it’s like to feel helpless when your best little friend is ill. You want to do everything you can control.

By the way, if you have any suspicion that your vet is the sort to “have my boy up there multiple times after fixing the initial problem”, then you need to find another vet. Also, why would you allow your cat to have such a delicate surgery performed in “a rat’s nest in the ghetto”?

Well, I don’t have any more than $1100 for this to be done, half of which I paid. I took my other cat there when I 1st moved to Columbus because I didn’t know the area and I ended up liking the vet because he wasn’t all – grab your cat and perform medical procedures on him, he pets them and has a heart for them, but I fear I made a bad decision and now I am really doubted myself. It’s not the best neighborhood, no. It’s not the most advanced clinic, no, but it was all I could afford to try to rectify this problem. I will go bankrupt from this all now and was only willing to for him. I’m really concerned and really scared.
