Help me defeat Instant Messenger glitches?

Asked by Blueroses (18256points) October 7th, 2011

I’m having a heck of a time with instant message servers.
-MS Live randomly blanks out posts on both sides
-Google Chat bumps me offline frequently during a conversation
-Facebook Chat knocks my partner offline so he can’t see what I write.

This is beyond frustrating, as the glitches happen at the most inopportune times and IM is our primary means of communication.

Is it something in my settings? Does anyone else have these issues? Or can somebody suggest a better IM to use (not Skype, please)?

My system information:
OS: Windows Vista
Browser: Google Chrome
Extensions: Ad Block, Awesome Screenshot, Facebook Disconnect, Facebook Chat Sidebar Disabler
Firewall: Windows (windows defender disabled)
Running: AdAware, Maxa Cookie Manager

Have you tried Yahoo? I believe they have a good IM thingy…can’t recall if I’ve ever tried it myself though.

I use AIM daily and have no issues with it. You might give it a try.

@FutureMemory I don’t really want to download yet another thingy without hearing what people who use it think of it. Thanks for the feedback though. :)

@Hawaii_Jake Do you use AdBlock also?

@Blueroses : Sorry, no, I don’t use Adblock.

Are you both on dial-up or at least one of you on dial-up?

Do you know if you are loosing internet connectivity during these blips? Does your network connection icon in your system tray say anything?
Who is your internet provider?
How is your PC connected? wireless to the neighbor? (just kidding)

Yahoo messenger is very stable and if one party does get intermittently knocked off, the offline messages work pretty seemless…

I can’t stand Skype’s layout and the last time I tried it, it was constantly signing itself in whether I wanted it or not and unblocking people I had blocked.

@Tropical_Willie I believe we both use broadband and wireless routers. I’ll ask him though. Good point. just asked, yes. We both have cable modems

@blueiiznh I don’t think that’s the case because I think the frequency of it happening would be noticeable in other areas like fluther chat rooms or streaming videos. Both of those are issue-free.

You could try Pidgen to log into all of them without actually dealing with the program.

Thanks @Aethelflaed that’s a really good idea. I’ll look into that.
