Does it make sense to believe in horoscopes and zodiac signs?

Asked by Eby109 (94points) October 10th, 2011

I don’t really think that horoscopes and zodiac signs are really accurate because I find it hard to believe that people born in november have a totally different persona than people born in october…but then again some of the character traits that they have for libras (thats what i am) are kinda ture…it that just me????

Not really, but it sure is fun when they are right, and funny when they are wrong.

All zodiac signs are kind of true for everyone, that’s how “it fits” for everyone. They have done studies where they picked random people and gave them random horoscopes (not based on their birthday, just random), and the same percentage of people thought it was accurate as when they gave it to people who really do have those birthdays. In other words, the accuracy of a horoscope has nothing to do with astrology, the stars, when/where/what time you were born, and it has everything to do with the psychology. The human mind tends to make things fit that are close, detect patterns (that may not exist), selectively remember events, ignore things that don’t fit very well, etc.

It’s cool that your critical thinking mind picked up on the fact that it would be weird if people’s personalities were so different based solely on their date of birth. Skepticism is a powerful tool and it can be fun to learn the techniques people use to try to trick you.

Agreed with @gorillapaws; horoscopes tend to be written in a fairly general way so that almost anybody reading it will think, “wow, that’s me!”

I don’t believe in horoscopes at all.

I’ll just leave these two vids here

I give my natal chart the same respect I give my tarot cards.

That is: they are a fun way to look at yourself in a different light. Are they actually forecasting anything? No. But if you’re in a reflective mood it can help.

And sometimes it’s just funny.

@gorillapaws nailed it. It’s all psychology. Combine sweeping generalizations with the phenomenon of confirmation bias, and you’ve got a great horoscope. That said, I read my daily—fun, isn’t it ;-)

To me, no. To others, yes. For me, the general horoscope, as other have said, is written in a general way so that it can apply to almost anyone in some way. Not to mention even if it doesn’t apply, people will try and make it apply and stretch it until it does (this may even happen subconsciously). Additionally, I have never seen any convincing evidence that the position of heavenly bodies affects a person’s development. It all seems to be complete bullplop to me. Utter bullplop.

The horoscopes that predict your day on a daily basis I don’t believe one bit. They just give you a prediction by throwing out a “net” of possibilities that could relate to you. Zodiac personalities work somewhat in the same way, but for some odd reason I believe in them to some extent. I guess it’s just the thought that the consistency of daily predictions would result in inaccuracy, whereas zodiac personality predictions are much more “proven” and have stood the test of time, through refinement and improvement…or it could all just be in my head.

Has a horoscope ever made a testable prediction that has been reproduced?

I am an Aries, and we Aries don’t believe in the Zodiac, or astrology.

No, since it is an unproven art.
