What store has cool replacement back housing designs/colors for iPhone?

Asked by XD (1524points) October 10th, 2011

I have to replace the battery on my 3GS and figure I may as well replace the plastic back housing since it is cracked. I’m having trouble finding much in the way of my kind of cool (adult male who doesn’t want kittens on his phone). Do you know of a source? I looked at some site called “Trait something” but their designs seem lame. I also looked on Amazon, which has some colors at least that are better than nothing. Any help?

If it were me, I woould opt for looking for cool designs in skins. There are so many fantastic ones out there.

If the crack is minor, I’d just skin it as is. If it were larger or deeper so as to be noticeable underneath the skin, I’d just pick up a cheapo one from phonepartsusa.com for $3 regardless of color and pick out a cool skin to cover it.

In spite of it’s name decalgirl.com has a great rep and some really male oriented great looking designs.

Just browse their site and you’ll see what I mean. Plenty of kickass stuff for guys.

I’ll just give you one example.

Typically turquoise is not necessarily that appealing to guys (unless it’s part of a sea life design or something) but there’s one on phone parts for $3.

You could easily cover up 99% of it with the neat dragon design (with mostly black and some turquoise) called Abolisher and have a close match that’s thoroughly masculine.

There are plenty of other really great ones. That’s only one example. The Abolisher is on sale for $7 so for ten bucks total you’ve got a great look for your phone.

They’ve got a bunch of really near artists working with them so I’m sure you’d find something you’ll like. The problem would more likely be choosing just one that you like. There are so many choices.

I got mine from a flea market. All the cases are brand new and I couldn’t believe the massive amount of styles to choose from. Also, there are those kiosks in the center of the mall that have so many to choose from. The one I got at the flea market was 12.00 and the ones at the AT&T store were 35.00 and up.

Thanks, Chyna… I’m talking about the actual plastic back on the phone. Is that what you mean or do you mean a case to add to the outside of the phone? I assume the latter.

I don’t think that you are realistically going to find much since it’s kind of a niche market compared to regular cases. What percentage of iPhone owners end up with a cracked case compared to the total user base. It just wouldn’t be financially feasible to manufacture specific designs for this small a market. You’re lucky to find neutral solid colors at this point.

And the fact that it’s the 3Gs makes it even more unlikely. Even the selection of REGULAR cases is much reduced for 3G and most of the desirable ones have sold out long ago. (I got my very popular Incipio Feather an entire year ago at a Fire Sale price of $5 when the original price was $30–45.) There just aren’t any left on store shelves by now. Everything is iPhone 4.

That’s the way the market works. Stores will carry what the greatest number of people will buy (NOT what is needed by relatively few). They need to make enough profit to stay in business. That’s the law of supply and demand. Such is capitalism.

When I upgrade my phone to the 4, I’ll pick up a cheapo tempo case and wait to get my expensive name brand quality one when the new model requiring a different case comes out. Then I’ll pick up the (now very expensive) model I really want at the clearance sales.

Just read that if you bring in your iDevice to Apple for a new battery, they just give you whatever they have with the same storage. So the worst I can do now is an 32 GB iPhone 4 with no contract for the price of Apple’s battery service. So I think I’ll go that route instead.

Where did you read that ? That sounds kind of too good to be true.

Are you sure that they don’t just give you the iPhone 4 as a loaner until the new battery gets installed ? And what is Apples cost for battery replacement? It can’t possibly be anywhere near what a brand new phone would cost.

If they routinely gave out a new phone everytime the previous generation’s battery ran out of juice, how on earth would they ever make any money ? There’s something missing in this picture.

Thanks for the link That’s interesting. Let me know if that works out for you.

I read it carefully and the iPhone part of the info was posted in the comments section by a “former Apple Genius” and NOT by the Gizmodo author himself and there’s nothing to indicate that he verified it independently.

There is nothing about that in the info on battery replacements on Apples own site.

I’m wondering if that was the policy at whichever Applestore the former Genius worked.

People can pretty much write anything in comments sections so I’m a bit doubtful still.

But if it works for you be sure and update here cuz I still have my iPhone 3G and if I could just get a new one for $79, I’d be very happy indeed.

Thanks.
