Have you had a "Do you live in a cave" encounter?

Asked by chyna (51306points) October 13th, 2011

I was in the checkout line of the store today when a couple came up behind me and saw the People magazine with Steve Jobs on the cover. The woman says “Oh did he die”? I turned to look at her to see if she was a cavewoman, but she was a normal looking 40ish woman. Have you had any encounters with someone that seemed so completely clueless as to what is going on around them?

My husband is notorious for not following any current events. I remember about a month after the BP incident him replying to something I said with “what oil spill?” LOL.

…I found out a girl at my lunch table has never seen Star Wars..

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Joker94 any of them? Because I’ve only seen the original, and I was a little kid at the time. I don’t really remember it.

Film prof was talking about Kuroswa and listed a few examples of his work. When he mentioned “Seven Samurai”, a classmate said “Oh, HE made that?”. No, it was Spielberg~

And more recently someone asked me what’s my favorite movie, I replied “The Seventh Seal”. When he said he has never seen it, I just walked away and facepalmed.

I know people who have never seen Mad Men, or Doctor Who. True Story…

Joker94's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Not a single one. And she hasn’t seen Toy Story either! I mean, we grew up with Toy Story! You would have had to try to not see it..

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought I’ve never seen either of those, or The Seventh Seal. I’ve never seen Harry Potter, either. The only reason I saw the original Star Wars is because my dad was watching it. I saw it, but I don’t remember it.
Apparently I’m missing a lot as far as TV and movies go.

chyna's avatar

I never saw any of the above mentioned movies, except for the original Star Wars. <hangs head>

It’s okay…I haven’t seen Blade Runner, or the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy..

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Me either.

I am starting to develop a complex over the number of movies and shows that I haven’t seen. :\

chyna's avatar

Me too. Maybe I’m the one living in the cave.

Someone on Fluther had to tell me to watch Bladerunner. And I’m sorry, but I haven’t seen Doctor Who, either. :/

Never saw no Doctor Who, either.

I remmeber this guy when I was a teen who was a Xena fan. He and I, with a group of people, were talking about the show. One girl who didn’t know what it was asked where the stories took place. That so called fan said it was in a fictional setting.

Lawl. He would have been right, if we’re to consider that a lot of Xena’s environment is based on Greek mythology and places and things that didn’t actually exist…but he didn’t even know it was ancient Greece, and he said I was bullshitting when I pointed out that it was. How do you watch Xena and not know that? O_o

@Blackberry Is “Blade Runner” good?

As to the question..in my job I’m so freakin’ busy that I don’t even have time to look at the news sites. I don’t get a paper, and I avoid the TV news. And news only lasts a day or two anymore. I could have missed it. But I didn’t.

Blackberry's avatar

@Dutchess_III To be honest, it was kind of boring, but I did love the message of the movie. But that’s just my opinion.

I too overheard a conversation between two women at the supermarket. Long story short, one of them had no idea London was hosting next years olympic games!?!?!?!
Now, fair enough, i’ll let you off if you have no interest in sport & aren’t from these shores, but purleeze!!

Constantly. However, I’M the one that lives in the cave, and most of the time I’m glad I don’t know anyway… I’m referring to all the abstract sexual comments uttered by my perverted classmates. (Seriously, sometimes I think they just make this slang up off the tops of their heads).

I’m almost embarrassed to say this but….
A Trader Joe’s is opening in town. I thought TJ’s was a sporting good store like Dick’s or Cabela’s.
Ooops!

Blackberry's avatar

@worriedguy Me too…..I’ve never even been inside one. Apparently they’re really awesome.

I remember working with a girl a few years ago who actually said to me “who’s Dolly Parton?” Now, whilst she may not be to everyone’s musical taste, I thought every grown up at least knew of Dolly Parton.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@ucme I didn’t know London was hosting next year’s Olympics either.
Um..what IS a TJ, @worriedguy? I’d best be gettin’ back to my cave now…

ucme's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yes but you’re not from these shores though are ya?
I mean, it’s advertised everywhere. Food packaging, public transport….the list is endless!!

@Dutchess_III
I’m fairly sure that a Trader Joe’s is a small health food store chain.
