Looking for movies about Vikings. Can you help?

Asked by Berserker (33548points) October 20th, 2011

Seems to me that Vikings are divided into two different things. Actual Vikings that traveled around, and stereotypical Vikings with horned helmets.
I don’t know much about what the actual Vikings were like, but I’ll bet there’s some good movies about them. Even if they’re foreign, that’s fine. Any suggestion you have is totally fine. Any action packed flick is always fun, but if you do know of some movies about Vikings that depict them a bit more accurately than what is usually done, that would be awesome. Documentaries could be cool, too.
So if you got something, let me know. Thanks.

I saw an IMAX about the Vikings. Looks like you can get it on regular DVD.

The 13th Warrior starring Antonio Banderas.

Not sure this qualifies, but I love the Ingmar Bergman film The Virgin Spring.

According to this source:

The Vikings (1958) apparently has stereotypical costumes and castles, but reasonably accurate portrayal of lifestyle
.
Jungfrukällan, AKA The Virgin Spring (1960) just shows how hard life was in those days in Sweden. No viking warriors or fighting.

Í Skugga Hrafnsins, AKA In the Shadow of the Raven (1988) was filmed in Iceland, apparently a good film and pretty authentic

The Viking Sagas (1995) was a pretty decent attempt to explain the culture.

The Virgin Spring has caught my interest. Thanks guys. :)

And I saw The 13th Warrior. Pretty badass.

Reading up on The Vikings. Lol funny helmets. Still, looks cool.

I still remember watching the 1958? version of The Vikings. You will have to go to York in the UK, the Vikings liked it there.

How To Train Your Dragon. ;)

If The Saga of Bjorn counts, I’d recommend it!
@AshLeigh I’d second that film in a heartbeat.

@Joker94, it’s the only one I could think of… And I love it. :)

@jaytkay What the HELL?? XD That was awesome lol.

@Joker94 Dammit. The video will NOT stop skipping, I can’t hack this. But it looks really fun though, and I love that opening song. (minus the skipping)

@Symbeline Aww..that sucks! It’s a great short film, if you ever get the chance!

Berserker's avatar

I keep trying it, but…fuckin. Is there anywhere else besides Vimeo or wtv I can find it on?

No way can I vouch for the historical accuracy of Outlander, but I enjoyed it. ;-)

Joker94's avatar

@Symbeline Not that I can find so far :/ But I’ll keep looking!

After roaming the internet for highly authentic Viking material, I came across this hideously grisly and gory video. Be warned.

@Symbeline now you got me watching the series…. looks like I’m going to be up all night.

mazingerz88's avatar

I’m going to look me up some Viking zombies….!

Berserker's avatar

@njnyjobs Yeah me too, and I have to go to work the morn…I’ll save it for the weekend I guess, but really, thanks for sharing the link to it. :)

@mazingerz88 You might find it odd coming from me…but Vikings are too badass to even be able to become zombies. :)

mazingerz88's avatar

@Symbeline Dude, this Viking is definitely not your ordinary Viking zombie. : )

And yes, Vikings are such badasses that you would want to bring them in any fight against zombie hordes. And let me pay tribute to Valhalla by saying, if any Viking ends up being a zombie, I think he would still continue hacking other zombies to pieces. How’s that for badass?

( Hmm, maybe Walking Dead should come up with a freaky zombie like that. That kind of zombie anomaly is not too far fetched, right?

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned Valhalla Rising, it’s a very artistic film with very dark overtones which takes the less is more style of dialogue (with the main character being a mute). It’s not for everyone but I think in a lot of ways it’s a more realistic portrayal of life as a viking and the violence while very graphic is much more believable than The 13th Warrior for example which is in stark contrast to Valhalla Rising.

Visually the film is stunning, the score builds suspense and anxiety within the film unlike any other I’ve ever heard, it takes (or at least took me) a few times to really get a handle of everything going on but it gets much better with a greater understanding of the characters, especially One-Eye played by the excellent Mads Mikkelsen (you might remember him from Casino Royale, King Arthur and I believe he’s playing in the upcoming Three Musketeers film). It’s a great testemant to his performance how he makes a cold blooded savage so relatable yet so foriegn.

It’s a film you’ll either love or hate but I strongly suggest watching it once.

Another vote for How to Train Your Dragon, although they are vikings in a more romanticized way. You could also take a look at The Secret of Kells, which feature Viking raiders as antagonists in a very powerful portrayal.

Probably not what you’re looking for, but couldn’t resist for the lulz XD

Valhalla Rising is a little weird, but interesting. Visually beautiful.

Valhalla Rising, yeah, I remmeber wanting to rent that when it came out, but it never happened. It’s on my list though. Reading about it, kinda reminds me of Centurion. Which wasn’t about Vikings, but still…captives, mute warriors. If it’s as dark and dramatic as Centurion, I’m prolly gonna like it.

Pathfinder was quite awesome. I don’t remmeber much of it, but there was some guy from the future…I certainly remmeber the Vikings though. And how they all died on that cliff side. Cool movie, I loved how sinister they were.
I own Beowulf, but…meh. That whole movie felt so wrong…awesome imagery though.

@mazingerz88…I’m not arguing with that. At all. Zombie Vikings still hacking up zombies. I love that. :) It’s like a perfect fit.
Not too far fetched at all. Well, I’d pay to see it anyways. :)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. :)
