How would you feel if you broke one of your morals?

Asked by bluejay (1014points) October 22nd, 2011

What are some of your most treasured morals? How would you feel about yourself if you broke one of them? Have you ever broken one of your morals?

I know who I am, and what I stand for. I know when I have gone past the line I have drawn.
When I have done this, I feel shattered.
It usually takes time to forgive myself, if I ever can. I still agonize over transgressions that happened 30 years ago.

I haven’t, yet, so I don’t know. Mine are very simple: live my life and don’t hurt anyone. I go to work and take my steps to try to secure my future and that’s it.

I have done some thought experiments where I put myself in predicaments that conflict with my morals, but ultimately, I’m not in those positions so I have no idea what it’s like or what I would do.

I have a tri-level moral system really. Some things I think are immoral, such as eating animals, but I do so anyway cause they are tasty. This is beause it is a casual idealitic not too important kind of moral. The more serious ones would be things like cheating on a partner, or stealing from family, and these things are not flexible. Then there are the very serious ones, such as child rape and so on.

If I ear a burger I wont feel bad for a moment, If I cheated on someone I would find it hard to live with my self, and if I raped a kid I would find it impossible to live with my self.

One of my most treasured morals is I believe in fidelity for myself and others. I did break this once, on purpose and of course, I later felt awful. I was newly burnt from a deceptive relationship where that person had said they most loved my morals. In anger, I played around with someone who was a married cheater in order to destroy in myself what used to make me feel valued and proud. Pretty self destructive but I’d not been that hurt or angry in my life before. It wasn’t much of a catharsis, just made me feel like a creep and I’ve not done it again.

I’ve never broken one of my morals yet, but if I did, I probably wouldn’t give a damn. Lol-lol.

No, seriously, if I did, I’d probably feel bad for awhile and vow not to do it again…..like getting a girl unnecessarily pregnant out of wedlock!

I did. My husband cheated on me, and I broke my moral code and cheated in a one-night stand. It did not make me feel any better.

I hate to tell even the littlest white lie, that makes me feel as if I have breached my moral code. Anything bigger than that and I’d spontaneously combust. I am just not wired to be immoral or amoral.

I promised my wife I would be honest with her, and after a decade or more, I stopped being honest. I wish I could have been. It really bothers me. I never should have promised her the things I promised, but at the time I believed I could keep those promises.

I broke several of my moral standards several times. When I came to my senses, I begged forgiveness, repented of my actions and thoughts, and was promptly forgiven. Being a Christian is so kewl! : ))

Actually I have broken one of my morals. I should feel bad about it and sometimes I do but I don’t regret it for a moment. It’s not something I want a reputation for but at the time I did what I felt was right even though I knew it wasn’t the best way to conduct myself.
