Why would my home computer be having internet connection problems?

Asked by jca (36062points) October 24th, 2011

Something happened a few weeks ago where the wires to my computer got disconnected. In trying to connect things correctly, Belkin (router manufacturer) told me I should buy a new router. Got the new router, still had connection problems. Had the cable/internet provider send a refresher signal, STILL had problems, even though the icon for network connection said “connected” and “signal strength: Excellent.” Called the cable provider and asked them to send another signal, and she did, and she told me to disconnect everything and connect it again, which would reset the signals (or something like that). She told me “I’m looking at your levels and everything looks good.”

I did that (disconnected everything and hooked it back up) and I am still having connection problems. I would say about 50% of the time, it either times out or it can’t connect to the server. Often, the remedy is to shut the computer off completely, turn it on again, and it usually works ok (not all the time, but often).

This has been going on for the last two weeks and it’s very annoying and time consuming. I don’t send emails and respond to Fluther as often (I’m at work now) because it’s annoying to type something out and have to lose it or discard it.

Have you had a chance to exclude the computer as the problem? What about other laptops or devices connected to your network? Any problems?

When you are having these difficulties, can you try pinging the site? Does the request time out?

Have you tried using a different DNS (like Google Public DNS)?

i don’t have another laptop but I may try to borrow one for test purposes.

Can you explain “pinging the site?”

(If Windows)
START -> RUN -> type cmd and hit enter.

Try pinging the website….
ping google.com

Might be a way to exclude the possibility that you have some browser problem.

Did your PC undergo an automatic Windows Update? If so, try to Restore your PC’s system to a date that you think the internet worked prior to the WU.

Also, it may help to set your network card on a static ip.

What browser/version do you use? You may want to reset the setting to Default.
