Which Home Theatre system would you recommend?

Asked by raven860 (2179points) October 24th, 2011

I am in the market for a new Home Theater system. I am looking for an exceptional 7.1 model.

-Which is a model & brand that you will recommend?
-What other advice can you give for shopping for one?

My personal preference would be to mix and match: possibly a Sony Blue Ray TV, Bose surround-sound system, and Blue-Ray DVD player. : )

@CaptainHarley Well, I do have a Sony XBR and a PS3 (relatively good blu-ray player I believe) and so now I am just missing the surround sound system (I just realized that I should edit my question…I am only in the market for the surround sound). I have looked at a few Bose but they sell for 2k or 2.5k. I am wondering if a system that expensive is really worth it.

If you’re on a budget, consider this highly rated system: Onkyo SKS-HT540

@njnyjobs, @CaptainHarley I don’t mind spending around $1k or a little above for surround sound. I found these right now: http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/home_theater/home_theater_speakers/acoustimass_10/index.jsp

They basically don’t have the player (I will be using my PS3). Would you call that a good setup or is the player and important part as well?

Or try this package with receiver and speakers HT-S8400 It meets your price point. Just use a HDMI connection between PS3 and receiver.

@raven860 How big is your media room? do you have drapes and bulky furniture around that may affect the sound quality in the room?

@ninyjobs

I am actually looking for something for my bedroom which is something like 15’ X 19’. There is the bed, a chaise, a dresser, and a bulky old cupboard and curtains.

@Tropical_Willie

I have been considering models from thar series/brand a thought. I am not familiar with their reputation tho, but I assuming those are good because of your recommendation.

@raven860

I just like Bose because they take up less room, yet I can still make all the windows rattle! : D

@CaptainHarley The Bose speakers tend to push the high-highs and the low-lows and misses the middle ranges of sound waves. Small speakers for highs and Accustomass for lows ( bust the windows ) and nothing for the middle range.

I never noticed, perhaps because my head was reverberating! Heh!

@Tropical_Willie Other than the model above which other ones can you recommend? Also, can you tell me more about the brand? Can you tell me a list of things I should look out for while shopping. And are any other tips like the Bose one you mentioned above? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this subject because the sales people don’t tell me much other than go for the heavier priced item.

Onkyo is a good all round brand name for Home Theater equipment.
