Chance of a dog dying from anesthesia?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) October 26th, 2011

My dog (a 14 or so year old cockapoo, around 13 pounds) is going on for a tumor or xray thing in her mouth, and I heard that small dogs can die from it. What are the chances of this happening?

Any animal (or person) can die from complications related to anesthesia, and the risks rise for older individuals or those with underlying health issues.

By taking certain precautions, you can lower the chances. Doing things like running pre-anesthtic bloodwork, placing an IV catheter for venous access during surgery, being placed on IV fluid supplementation, and having an experienced anesthesiologist will all help to reduce the risk.
