Does my TV have HDMI?

Asked by Kokoro (1424points) October 30th, 2011

I have a Sony SU GW2. I want to buy an Apple TV but am not sure it has capability. Thinking I may have to settle for the Roku or Google TV, the only other streaming boxes I know.

Any advice appreciated regarding boxes as well. Thanks!

You can always buy HDMI for your TV. I bought two HDMI cables yesterday.
Just extra advice: If you want, you can buy the LG 65-inch screen. (3D) Fucking orgasmic.

What do you mean “buy HDMI”? My TV is old so I can’t just buy the cables. I don’t want to buy a new TV at this time so that’s why I was thinking of just setting for another streaming box.

Does it have an HDMI input (outlined in yellow in this picture)?

It’s small, roughly ¾ inch wide.

No it does not, this TV is years and years old.

@Kokoro Then buy the apple one. “I want to buy an Apple TV”?

@Luiveton Apple TV only works with TVs that have HDMI. I am not sure if my TV has HDMI, which is why I am asking the question… to find out if there are other options.

@Kokoro What connectors does the TV have? With that info maybe someone will chime in with good alternatives.

The common choices (your TV may have more than one):

1) Antenna (simply two screws)
2) Coax
3) RCA video (single yellow plug labelled Video in this picture )
4) Composite (three connectors labeled PR PB Y, same picture as #3 above)

@Kokoro No, if your tv doesn’t have the HDMI connector in @jaytkay‘s picture, then it doesn’t have HDMI.

Here is another easy way to tell; HDMI was not even produced until 2003, so if your TV is older than that…

Even if you don’t have HDMI capabilities, you can always buy a converter cable like HDMI to RCA (The Red/Yellow/White ones). They’re probably less than $10 on Monoprice.com, so don’t let the lack of other non HDMI options stop you.

For the love of all that is holy do not buy cables at a store. They are marked up ridiculously.
