What is the best thing you ever got for Halloween?

Asked by spykenij (1831points) October 31st, 2011

I don’t know… Sometimes it means more just seeing what someone else offers, regardless of what it is or if you even get it. When I was a kid, I used to trick or treat in my mom’s old neighborhood, the West Park area of Cleveland, Ohio. I remember going so many times and how awesome the people were. These were people our parents (I was always with my cousins) trusted and they would let us go into the peoples’ houses that invited us to come in. The best thing I ever got was pennies. It had nothing to do with what they were, but it really touched me who they always came from – the neighborhood bums. They used to gather on Judy Court and burn a fire in a barrel to warm themselves. Not sure who they were or where exactly they were from, but it always meant a lot to me when they would give us pennies. Anyone else have any heart-warming stories for this chilly night?

News that my Uncle, a corpsman with the marines was no longer MIA and had in fact escaped and returned to the 26th marine lines at Khe Sanh.

He had been a “guest” of the NVA for about 6 weeks.

Homemade caramel apple I was allowed to eat. I’d seen them but never knew what they tasted like, never knew what a caramel tasted like. Wow, Granny Smith apple with caramel coating made from those cellophane wrapped squares.

The appreciation of the kids (and parents) in the neighborhood for the graveyard decorations, bon-fire with marshmallows and our costumes we wear when we greet them.

My terrific dog, Bender, was born on Halloween (best treat ever) and I got him on Christmas Eve so he is a double holiday boy. His brother, Grits, in the photo at left, is a New Year’s Eve baby.

Not a personal gift, as such, but my church (many churches have Halloween-compatible – that is, with games and candy – festivities, sort of like the inverse of Giftmas) set up an enclosed maze of refrigerator boxes that was pretty cool. Rather than the cartoony trappings of the modern Halloween yard, the maze provided the deeper, more genuine fear of being lost in the dark, and an accompanying relief when you got out. Or would have, had it not been for the gaps that they left to let some light in. :D It was, of course, full of kids.

@spykenij Your story about getting pennies from the bums is touching. One of my favorite stories about Halloween is trick-or-treating at Liberace’s house when I was growing up in Las Vegas. We lived very close to him, and we loved going to his house on Halloween because he had his doorman at the front gate handing out sandwich bags full of pennies to us kids. I like your story much better though. very sweet =)

The best thing I ever got was the love for the holiday from my mom. She always decorated our house really cool and creepy looking. Everyone loved visiting our house because of this. It’s my favorite holiday now. I celebrate it during the entire month of October.
