Any thoughts about the latest on Assange and his extradition?

Asked by rojo (24179points) November 2nd, 2011

Just noticed that the British courts have found against him and he is to be extradited and wondered what the FlutherWorld thought about him, the charges and Wikileaks in general

I think he was searching for his 15 minutes of fame. Now it is all over. His little bit of fame isn’t going to prevent him from being treated as anyone else who is similarly accused and so it should be. I never saw him as some sort of hero. I can’t see anything good that has come from his leaks????

@rooeytoo “WikiLeaks has published material about extrajudicial killings in Kenya, toxic waste dumping in Côte d’Ivoire, Church of Scientology manuals, Guantanamo Bay procedures…”

Yeah, sounds pretty trivial if you ask me.

I don’t see the word “trivial” in my response???

Oops, then I meant to say, “Yeah, I don’t see how anything good could have come from this.”

I don’t think it is really news. He is wanted by another country, They have an extradition treaty.

I don’t like Wikileaks. I don’t like Assange.

Most “leaked” information was already available to those who wanted to find it. Except for the diplomatic correspondence, and the leaking of same has done what good? If he really wanted to save the world, there are many less contentious ways of making the uninformed (albeit helpless to affect any change) masses aware. He was seeking attention and still is but rapidly losing his attraction. The professional sit inners have upstaged him.

@marinelife: Out of curiosity, why do you dislike Wikileaks? I’d just like to hear your opinion. :)

@rooeytoo Even if some were already leaked, so what? News organizations break the same stories, and news isn’t confined to one organization.

I was unaware Wikileaks or Assange were out to save the world. That seems a naive thing for them to say, if they even made such a statement. And I’m having a hard time seeing how spreading information is seeking attention?

It is extremely troubling and indicative of the continued breakdown of the rule of law in the West.

Sweden has not charged him with a crime. No warrant exists. So the extradition treaty does not really come into play.

Maybe this joke of a trial can finally be over and done with at this point. Extraditing a man from another country because of a sexual assault charge is disingenuous.

Federal governments don’t give a crap about sexual assault victims enough for this level of action. They only care that he was a political enemy and it was the easiest way to clamp him down. This thing is going to be silently dismissed since there were no true charges filed on him, and they’ll let him go because the news have stopped paying attention to him and Wikileaks is running empty on funds because CC companies and Paypal are playing political games and blocking funding as well.

People can call Assange an egotistical jerk as much as they want he’s merely the pariah, the real concern is at the level at which governments and corporations are willing and able to go to silence dissent.

@asmonet Because it has no moral controls. It is just what Julian Assange (who is he to decide?) wants to put out in the public.

@marinelife And who are the credit companies to block donations from the public to wikileaks?

rojo's avatar

@marinelife agreed, but the same arguement can be said of the original sources; who are they to decide what gets put out into the public. I think the more transparency the better, particularly in matters of government secrecy. I think I read somewhere that there are something like twelve (!!!!) levels of secrecy imposed by the US gov. As for the corporate information, I have not seen anything that I thought was a “real” secret.
