Is there any relief to live with scar tissue from four back surgeries?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) November 8th, 2011

It was bad enough that I had to endure the first surgery in 1972. Endoscopy had not yet been invented and today I am suffering from the pain of those scars left behind. Question:how does one cope with these scars, other than taking pain medicene and muscle relaxers for the rest of their life? My doctor states that surgery is not an option, it will only make the situation worse. I have tried physical therapy and nothing seems to help.

It always saddens to me to hear someone suffers with chronic pain. It is such an awful curse. Most people who have chronic pain have time during the day they are unaware of their pain. Usually it is while focusing on something else. Trying to notice when these moments happen, and hopefully creating more of those moments. It’s a trick of the brain I guess. I never was very good at coping with my pain, part of it is because I deeply believe I could and should be able to be cured. Acceptance comes and goes for me.

Regular stretches seemed to help my father more than anything when he was suffering from chronic back pain. He didn’t have scar tissue pressing on his spinal cord though, but its a free and easy solution to try at least. It may offer some relief.

Light swimming also seemed to help because it’s non-weight bearing and may relieve some of the pressure. Also experimenting with ice and heat may help somewhat as well. Best wishes. I’m sorry to hear about your pain; I hope you find something to make it more manageable.

A massage every now and then works well for my scoliosis and back muscle tension, then again i’m not in chronic pain as much as i happen to have days when i wake up with my back completely stuck. It’s not the same problem, but it might help regardless.

Have you ever tried lying on a heating pad? That does wonders for certain kinds of pain for me. So sorry you have to deal with this. You can always message me if you want to talk.
