In your kitchen cabinets, do you place your cups and glasses upside down? If so, why?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) November 10th, 2011

In a recent trip to visit my son in Seattle, I noticed that all of his cups and glasses were upside down inside in his kitchen cabinets. I stood there and wondered why he would place them there in this fashion. He has a dishwasher and the cups and glasses are dry, when finished. I have never placed these items upside down in my kitchen cabinets. Question: what reason could my son have for placing his cups and glasses, this way, in his kitchen cabinets? And, no I did not ask him why.

I can’t think of anything! Maybe he just likes it that way.

It’s very simple. The dust doesn’t collect.

I just do it because I was taught that way, but I assume it’s so dust doesn’t get in the cup.

If you occasionally dust the shelves in your kitchen cabinets, you will find particles of dust, spices, small moths and unidentifiable fine particulate debris. If your glasses are stored upside down, you don’t have to wipe the bottom before each use.

Just the rim…

Huh? This makes absolutely no sense to me. I have never seen this. Dust collecting in the cup? How many cups do people have? The longest a cup will sit in a cabinet in my house is 1 to 1.5 days. I’d rather not have the part of the cup I will be putting my mouth on resting on the cabinet shelf, unless I’m scrubbing those at least as much as my cups.

I do. I stack all glasses and cups upside down, some in a “nesting” fashion.
Given the methodology to my madness I’d say that it is to prevent dust collecting, even though they are behind closed doors, so to speak. haha

I live in the hills with gazillions of species of insects and tree frogs that frequently get in the house.
I had a frog living behind the spice rack on my range last summer. Hunting bugs from atop the Lemon Pepper. lol

Infact, when I pulled out my giant soup pot to make cranberry sauce last night there was a small dead spider and it’s web inside. Blech!

I do periodically dust and clean my cupboards but in the wildlife zone over here I don’t wish to accidently drink a bug in the middle of the night.

P.S. The toilet paper is hung OVER not under too. Sheesh..everyone knows that’s the “RIGHT” way. lol

@Coloma – How could you be so right about toilet paper and so wrong about stacking cups? :)

Coloma's avatar

@tom_g Heh..well ya know..preferences, hey, come on over for a nice cold glass of tree frog. LOL

@tom_g Blech! Wow, I KNEW they ate roast Guinea pig, guess the frog smoothie must be their version of Jamba Juice. lol

Yes, I have always placed them upside down. It keeps dust from collecting in the ones that are not used as often. Also if you happen to have any “uninvited guests” lurking in your cabinets (yep, things like roaches, ants, etc… and we all have them from time to time), I’d far rather them be crawling around on the outside of the glasses rather than in them.

I have always placed glasses upside down. It is something my mom taught me to keep them from collecting dust.

I’ve always done that. My parents did that, and I guess I just picked up. Dust makes sense, although most of my dishes and glasses don’t sit in there long enough to collect anything much. Still, it’s just the way it is for me. ’‘scratches noggin’’ It’s weird how I just do that to cups and glasses though, but not dishes and bowls. I mean those must collect dust too. Eh I denno. For me it’s just a habit thing rather than anything else.

@gailcalled That’s why I store my glasses right side up. Storing them upside down means that the rim of the glass will go on the dusty shelf that’s covered in random debris… I guess there’s no way to win this one and have a perfectly clean glass. But my dad always said that everyone eats a pound of dirt in their lifetime, and that gave me a pretty lackadaisical attitude about having things perfectly clean.

My mother keeps her cups and glasses upside down, but where she lives, she has problems with ants in the house. I keep mine upright. No ants, and I think that I don’t clean my cupboard shelves often enough to want to sit the rim of a cup on them. Also with my “posh” glasses I don’t want to chip the rims, which I am probably more likely to do if I stack them upside down.

I can always rinse or wipe it before use, if it’s collected dust or insects.
