General Question

I recently noticed a pattern: whenever it rains overnight my car acts funny the next day. Can you identify the problem?

Asked by Sponge (541points) November 16th, 2011 from iPhone

The symptoms are: difficulty to start, stalling, stopping dead.

Edit: should I go to a auto repair shop like Firestone or tune-up shop like Jiffy Lube?

The car is not from England!

If it is an older car the ignition wires, distributor cap and battery cable may need to be replaced. Also a tune-up with new plugs and clean air filter.

Leaky gas tank that allows water to get in?

wundayatta's avatar

My guess is that water is getting into the electrical system and causing temporary shorts. Take it to a shop for a professional’s opinion. And to get it fixed.

I think @wundayatta‘s theory is more plausible than my water in the gas tank one.

Take it for a tune up & let them know the issue. Until then, you can buy cans of wire dry spray at your local automotive parts shop. The cans are wonderful for keeping your car started in damp weather until your issue gets repaired.

Specifics on year, make and model might be helpful.
A bad plug wire or poor seal on some electrical component.
Finding a service location that you trust is key.

If the car is an older model, the distributor cap will sometimes develop a small, hairline crack, which can allow moisture into the cap which shorts out the system. Same thing with the clips that hold the cap in place; they weaken over time and allow moisture in. That’s the first thing I would check.

Ok I forgot to add the car is an Infiniti G20 year 2000.

Holy crap! Well, scratch my proposed solutions! Heh!
