Do you use the PM feature, why or why not, and what is the most pages of PM's you have exchanged with another jelly in one day?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) November 18th, 2011

Zensky’s question made me wonder how many jellies use the PM feature. Do you exchange a lot of PM’s or very few? What’s the most you’ve ever sent or received? Just curious.

I hate getting them and pretty much never reply.

Longest would be with Dog. There was a long exchange a few years back about working out DNS stuff with our website.

I’ve sent/received a couple but never really proper conversations, I have had a few conversations with bob_ but other than that I’m really more on fluther to answer and ask questions not so much chat as I do with my friends on facebook. I would never downright ignore a PM but then again I would never really send one out of the blue so much. Only times I have sent them have been for congratulations on landmark lurves and thank-yous for some great help some people have given me on questions.

I don’t often use the PM feature but there are a few jellies I have enjoyed chatting to.

With a small group:

From time to time to exchange news or information that is off-topic;

From time to time to grouse and carp;

From time to time to share photos, poetry, and other interesting tidbits with like-minded jellies;

From time to time to verify my critical thinking, logic, fact-finding or use of language;

And from time to time to share self-congratulatory hi-fives.

I use the feature quite a bit. With some people, so many messages fly back and forth in a day that entire pages get filled and I can’t find one particular PM that references something I wanted to look at.

One thing I’d like is if PM notifications didn’t get lost once you open one message. I’ve missed some only because I don’t know they’re there if they arrive in the midst of a conversation with someone else.

I chit chat with a few jellies on occasion, not even close to on a daily basis.

I’d say I average maybe 2–3 pm exchanges a week.

I really enjoy the few I talk with but have no desire to maintain serious communications with everyone.

LuckyGuy's avatar

There are very few I converse with. I usually use it for transfer of info that is of a more private matter and not interesting to the entire collective.
I’ll admit I do enjoy seeing my “Messages for You” line displayed in bold font. It’s like getting a little present.

I love the PM feature. I’ve learned so much from some people here and have certainly enjoyed chatting with them. I can’t count how many I’ve sent or received.
I love Fluther :)

Oh, man, sometimes I have more PM action in a day that open thread action! But you already know that @Adirondackwannabe! I love the feature, I get to know the Jellies much better in that environment!

JLeslie's avatar

I don’t use it very often. A quarter of the time when I send a message is to make sure a difficult conversation has not offended the person I am going back and forth with. Another quarter is getting to know someone better. Probaby 15% of the time it is to state my shock about some jelly on a Q (I guess that counts as gossip). The rest is to see how someone is doing, or to update them on something they asked me about.

I love the PM feature. I don’t get many messages anymore, but I really like catching up that way

I woke up to find 9 PM’s waiting for me a few months ago.

I pm with a small circle of people. I’m like @worriedguy in that when I see my message for you lit up, it’s like a present. I get excited.

Nullo's avatar

I’ve pmed quite a bit with various jellies. Mostly conversations, though there are also a couple of messages that parallel thread activity with someone. There are also a few SOSes in there.

I get a lot of PMs every day (because of the job, not because I’m oh-so-popular), and I always try to respond (though a few have fallen through the cracks… I get a ton some days. Sorry to anyone I’ve neglected!). I’ve easily had over 30 in one day.

There are a few people I talk to just about every day and several I talk to about once a week that are non-job related. Just friendly stuff… life updates, lending each other support, making each other laugh, crying on shoulders, etc. I love me some PMs.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I really like the PM feature! Anytime I see a new message, it’s exciting!!! There are a few jellies I chat with via PM and some days there are a lot of messages going back and forth. We complain to each other about “real life” things, or we laugh about something that struck us as sheer hilarity, or maybe to even be a little snarky about another jelly that has us laughing or seeing red… Admit it, most of us talk about other jellies privately, at some point or another.

I guess my favorite part of the feature is the ongoing love affair @JilltheTooth and I have been carrying on via PM for quite some time now. I’ve almost convinced her to run away with me to Tahiti.

@WillWorkForChocolate
OOOO…Can I hold your bags? Please! I’ll carry all the Toblerone.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Oh, @WillWorkForChocolate , that was supposed to be a secret! Well, the the more the merrier! Leave your worries behind, @worriedguy , and bring that great “no-bug” hat! And the Brie. Always the Brie!

LuckyGuy's avatar

@JilltheTooth The Brie, cocoa butter, and hat can be packed in 20 minutes. PM me 30 minutes before the taxi arrives. Don’t tell anyone! Especially KatawaGrey!
I sure do like this PM feature. It is so private.

Wait! I did sent this to you via PM, didn’t I?
Oops!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@worriedguy Don’t worry, I’ve got all the chocolate we need. And bug spray. And sunblock. And handcuffs. Oh shit, did I say that out loud?

I’ll meet you guys at the airport! We can get tipsy on the plane, sing bawdy sailor ballads and embarrass the flight attendants. :D

LuckyGuy's avatar

Oh you just mentioned my fantasy! Sitting between two females, sharing one blanket while enjoying the heady buzz of spiced bloody mary.
I’ll bring the silk scarves and an extra set of soft Japanese calligraphy brushes.

Good thing we are still PM’ing. It would be disastrous if everyone knew about our sumie brush play.

JilltheTooth's avatar

I know, I just love this feature. Secret dalliances, no one will ever suspect! I’ll tell @KatawaGrey that I’m just going to visit my sister… she’ll never guess!

LuckyGuy's avatar

@JilltheTooth It’s perfect. Privacy and trust is so important in a relationship Let’s agree to never mention that 4 day weekend in Thailand with the triplets. That will remain our secret. OK?

chyna's avatar

Guys, I hate to break this to you, but you aren’t pming, you are on a thread. Now we all know about the triplets in Thailand.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Quadruplets, @chyna , you’re coming, too. It was gonna be a surprise, but…

LuckyGuy's avatar

Wait! You mean the PM thing wasn’t working? Gosh, I am so embarrassed.
@JilltheTooth I have @chyna ‘s tickets here. Do you want to give them to her or should I?

JilltheTooth's avatar

Let’s all meet up at the airport, Air Gauguin flight 100, filled with Polynesian delights! One way to Papeete, nobody’s coming back!!!

chyna's avatar

I’m packed and ready.

MilkyWay's avatar

I usually recieve more than I send, but once I recall sending over 30 PMs in a convo with a jelly friend in one day.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@chyna Oh crap, you mean all this was out in the open? I’m mortified!

EmptyNest's avatar

I like it and use it.

AshlynM's avatar

I’ve very recently started sending pm’s but in the past, I rarely used it. It was other people who have pm’d me and I usually try to reply. There was one particular Fluther user I exchanged about three pm’s with about a computer problem I was having but we were unable to figure out the cause of it. All other pm’s I’ve received have been a one time deal.
