What are some interesting movie covers?

Asked by Berserker (33548points) November 20th, 2011

I’ve noticed something about movie covers through the years. It used to be that many of them were really original, and you could see the effort put into it. Take Evil Dead 2 for example. How is this not awesome? I can think of so many old movies that have covers in that style, or something similar.
But today, mostly, I just see some actors on the covers, or maybe a logo or something. It’s always something really simple. It gets to the point yes, but I seem to prefer old covers that are fun to look at. It’s something I noticed, but I don’t know the cause. Is it because people judged covers too much? Or is it just easier to take some pictures and use that? Are people more attracted to certain actors? For sure, the idea behind a cover has to be appealing to the public, in some way.
Well, if someone knows anything about movie cover history, please share, if you want.
I’m looking for covers people think are interesting. I’d love to see artwork of old horror, martial arts and fantasy movies, however, anything you find interesting is welcome. Old, new, whatever. Got some cool movie covers you like?

Feel free to include video game covers too; they seem to share the same history a little.

I agree, I think old artwork for movies are definitely better than recent ones. The recent ones suck so much ass, it’s all blue and orange.
Here are some of my favorite poster arts
Inferno
Creepshow
Eyeball
Escape from New York

That Creepshow one is awesome. See, that’s what I’m talking about right there. It even has a drawn Dawn of the Dead poster. Epic.
The Eyeball artwork is damn fine as well.

…but what the fuck is this movie lol? Cool list, I dig, a lot. :)

The Dark!

A terrible tale of alien chilling. ;-0

It’s so awesome that all I get is an ’‘access forbidden’’ screen. But srsly, the link won’t let me in lol.

The forbidden access is more dumb than awesome, I’d say. ;-)

Try this one: http://i39.tinypic.com/3357eqa.jpg

I love the art for Secretary. It is teh sex.

And remember the gratuitous hero shots they used to do? You know, like where Luke was inexplicably ripped or Bruce was even more ridiculously ripped.

Meh, they all look the same to me.

A lot of these hit the spot.
Chopping Mall….where shopping costs you an arm & a leg XD

@ucme Oh man, that is excellent. I’m looking through it right now…most of these are so impressive. Some of those taglines are just hilarious too…So delightfully cheesy. Herbet West has a good head on his shoulders…and another on his desk. XD

And titles.

The Dead Hand that Crawls, Kills and Lives! Man I gotta see some of these. I wonder if that Idle Hands movie was influenced by this…

That Maniac poster rocks.

The Land that Time Forgot. I saw that. On Beta. It didn’t have that cover though…just some hairy guy with a book. Cool, a dinosaur and submarine…that’s almost more epic than in Uncharted, where you come across an old rusty sub by some ancient Inca ruins.
...now that I got to it, maybe what I saw was The People that Time Forgot…I can’t remember. It didn’t have that artwork either, though. Still, cool.

Invasion of the Saucer Men; LOL. Lookit those little fuckers lol.

Dude, Meat Cleaver Massacre. I have to see this.

Speaking of cheesy taglines, I think The Evil of Frankenstein wins for not even trying; He’s never been more shocking! Shocking! Shocking! XD

WHOA. House on Haunted Hill had a damn slick cover. O_O I own that movie, but it’s on a compilation set.

Ah, Eaten Alive, by Tobe Hooper. Always wanted to see this.

Wow I wish I could comment on all of them. Thanks for the great find. :) I’m all inspired now.

@fundevogel Haha, inexplicably ripped. I like that. True, too…Ash was all skinny in the first two, and all of a sudden he’s all ripped. Love the artwork for AoD.

@Blackberry Haha, nice. I never noticed that…but kind of did at the same time, with my complaint in the details. I wonder if they teach you about different themes in film school or wtv.

@Symbeline Hey, no probs.
Maniac is a kick arse piece of artwork for sure, I like Argento’s Demons too.
I’d have loved to have had some of those posters on my bedroom wall when I was a kid, alas I had to make do with Starsky & Hutch….yes that’s right Starsky & fuckin Hutch!! XD

Lol. :p Better than me, I had New Kids on the Block. O_o

Also I looked at part one of that person’s movie posters. Another great bunch. I’d seriously pay to have some of those.
