Both are good choices, but I prefer Sony.

I have no(t much) knowledge on photography and/or cameras, but it seems to me that it would be hard to decide which brand is better; it depends on the wishes and needs of the photographer.
Just like with other types of products; do you want a diesel or a gas engine in your car, do you want it stuffed with gadgets or keep it basic, do you want to remain it to have some value once you decide to sell it or not, etc.

I’ve made my living with photography for 35 years. I’ve used every piece of equipment imaginable… Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, Leica, Contax, Fuji…

Through it all, I always come back to the Maxxum Alpha Mount created by Minolta. Sony purchased Minolta five years ago, and their cameras are the current incarnation of where Minolta was heading. Sony’s have Minolta DNA, and once you get used to it, nothing else will do.

Current Sony’s have evolved photography into a new direction with their Mirrorless and SLT technology. They are unique for a number of reasons and taking the photo world by storm for both enthusiast and professionals alike. They are unlike anything else available by anyone. Sony’s market share in Asia and Europe is up 30% at the expense of Canon and Nikon. They are doing some spectacular innovations. They may look like other cameras, but inside they are vastly different technology.

Depending upon your needs, wants, level of knowledge, consider these unique offerings of the latest Sony products. Due to the flooding in Asia, some of these products have not yet been released in the US.

Available and on sale now through Nov 27th.

Sony Alpha A77, A65, NEX-5, NEX-5n

Or wait and get the NEX-7 in the coming weeks.

My Sony Alpha’s accept all my 20 year old Maxxum lenses perfectly.

My Sony NEX accepts all my 50 year old Leica, Contax, and Pen-F lenses perfectly.

Of course you can get the new lenses which have Carl Zeiss and Minolta G designs. I personally like the look of vintage glass on new sensors.

Here’s a link to the latest A65 Review You can find other reviews there too.

Im not sure.. but to me the Nikon has wayy better quality when it comes to taking a picture and recording stuff. And the Canon is all-around cheaper.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Wonder if you have also done video productions and which non-pro camera brand is the best right now in your opinion. I have been using a Canon ZR85 ( using mini-DV digitapes ) since 2004 to shoot home and travel videos, editing them in iMovie then burning them in iDVD.

I’m quite ambivalent in buying an HD cam forcing me to upgrade all equipment. I got used to easy downloading of video from my Canon to a Mackbook Pro via Firewire cable. I understand new cameras have gotten rid of digi-tapes. Feel like a dinosaur. Lol.

Jefferson Graham from USAtoday (Click here) tested the A77. He is a known Canon shooter but I guess he will become soon a Sony user: “If you’re serious about photography and video, spend what it takes. I know I will. I liked the camera so much, I plan on buying it once it is back in stock.!

Video starts at 360P… choose 720P or 1080P if you’ve got the bandwidth for full HD.

You get the same performance with a65, NEX-5, and NEX-7. These are the first video/stills cameras that allow for fast contrast detection AF… whereas up until now, all DSLRs revert to slow phase detection AF for video. The new Sony’s keep up with action much better and have image stabilization built into the body instead of the lens… so any lens is image stabilized.

BTW… although Graham likes the A77, he says he doesn’t like the incompatibility of the hot shoe, and lack of magnify view. He’s obviously a Canon shooter not used to Sony/Minolta. The camera not only magnifies, but also has peak focus mode which is changing the way AF is used better than magnify.

The hot shoe compatibility is remedied with a $10 adapter… no need for the $100 adapter he claims is the only solution. There are lots of third party hot shoe adapters for under $10… and the radio slaves are now designed native to Sony mount. He’s a little out of touch with his Sony knowledge… as are most CaNikon fanboys.

I had a terrible Nikon once. Now I have a great Canon. So I vote for Canon.

Can’t say I’ve ever had a Nikon, but my Canon (which is about 7 years old, no less) never fails to deliver.

For the last 20 years I’ve only bought Canon because they have taken good pics, they’re reliable and easy to use. I’ve never had a Nikon so I can’t say one way or the other about them.
