When you can't sleep, at what hour do you say "screw it" and stay awake?

Asked by shpadoinkle_sue (7188points) November 28th, 2011

It’s 5:30 am right now. If I lived alone, I’d make breakfast and stay up. I live at home with parents, so I can’t do that without getting a lecture and some disappointed looks about not getting any sleep. I was wondering at what point all you other insomniacs say screw sleep and decide to “start” your day.

Usually try to lie in bed til around 6, although often I will get up, check the computer and then go back to bed for a while.

My time is around 430 am. For 44 years. this was my wake up time to go to work and I have yet to break that habit.

My wife has sleep apnea, so we are both in the same situation.

Fortunately, sometime during the day, we both catch a cat nap and this is our salvation.

You should have a sleep study to determine your inability to have normal sleep.

Wife was prescribed Lunesta and it now works wondefully for her. I am still out there.

If i have to be up in 5 hours or less I forgo sleep, as sleeping 5 hours or less just makes me more tired. I need at least 6 or 7 hours of sleep, ideally I like 8. During my cannabis usage days it was 12 hours minimum.

Sometimes, like now, I’ll just stay in my room and fluther. I only leave to eat, and by then, my father at least is up.

If I can’t fall asleep by midnight, I take a shot of NyQuil. Knocks me right out!

Warning: It’s not something you want to use regularly as a sleep aid because your body develops a dependency on it to sleep after a few times.

If I don’t feel like sleeping, I’d wait for about 20 minutes then go like ‘Aah, fuck it.’

I keep trying until my son wakes up.

4am is my magic number. If I’m still awake at 4am, I just get up and prepare to be awake for the rest of the day. Actually, it’s more like… after 4. If I’m up past 4 I will stay up.

I stay up until I fall asleep in my recliner, then I wake myself long enough to walk to the bedroom and fall in bed.

Usually between 2am and 4am. When I was a kid, I swore by drinking a few swigs of pickle juice at 3am would make you stay up all night. Probably something my cousins told me, but I can’t remember. Weird, but seemed to work for me.

Now I want pickle juice.

It varies. If I know I need the sleep, I’ll just lie in bed because it’s still rest. If it’s the weekend….good morning.
